Hostgator Reseller Account

I just upgraded to a reseller account at hostgator. Hostgator says they can transfer my sites to the new account but I'm a little weary. Is this safe? If something happened to my sites I think I'd poop directly into my pants (I work from home and these sites are my livelihood). However, I've heard that a reseller account is better for SEO reasons...

So should I transfer my old sites or only add new sites I create in the future to the reseller account?

I forgot to add that these sites are already with hostgator ("baby" account) but I bought the domains through GoDaddy.

Back up your sites - then let HG transfer them. You should be backing up anyway on a regular basis.

Just get a complete backup before you have them do anything. This is always a good practice.

It is okay to contact me! I have been developing software since 1999, creating many popular products like phpLD.

What's the best way to back them up?

I used them previously. They offer great free tools and stuff, but they don't allow you to oversell your account which makes it hard to make money with them. But their free reseller software such as WHMCS is great.

Go into your cpanel and go to backup and run a full server backup .. Download and let hostgator transfer them.

They will ask you what you want moving - unfortunately 'everything!' won't do - you have to be very precise. They moved an entire reseller package off my account for me this week, transfering it to another Hostgator account holder. As well as all the domains, you have to tell them about subdomains and e-mail addresses too. Their form also asked for 'etc' - neither I nor the other party involved ever figured out quite what that meant!

In the end, Hostgator transfered all but one subdomain, and that was because I forgot to mention it. Fortunately, I'm cautious about these things too and had backed up all the site files and databases before letting Hostgator loose with my instructions. Backing up took ninety shades of forever, but it was worth it.

Back up by downloading all your site files (yup, all of them. Sorry) and exporting all the associated databases to your hard drive too.
