HELP! How Can I Monitize This Big List?! I'll pay!

A friend of mine is a club promoter and has 2500 Facebook friends, 3500 MySpace friends and nearly 1000 email addresses.

She knows absolutely nothing about internet marketing and it only occurred to me yesterday that she's sitting on a potential gold mine. But I don't know where to start with this list. I'm thinking that a survey would be a good place to start so I can at least apply some demographics and split the list into smaller targeted lists....

but where would you start?

I'm looking for a total blueprint - step by step.

If someone comes up with something really good I can use, they will be rewarded!

A survey is non-invasive, but you have to make it short because people don't like to fill out long forms. Or you could offer a free report and have them sign up on a squeeze page to add them to your list so you can use a follow up autoresponder to communicate. You could write a report about something about the economy which affects most people. Just a thought.

There are a lot of list building and management pros on this forum. I am sure someone will jump in and let you know which way to go.

Good luck to the both of you!

I personally wouldn't get too excited about this. A list of 1,000 isn't much if they didn't opt in to be marketed to and they are not targeted to any particular market. The Facebook and Myspace friends are nice but marketing to them will be a surefire way for her to lose all her friends pretty fast.

If she want to try it you first you need to figure out what all of them people have in common if anything, so first go through their comments and posts and see the kinds of things that interest them or something they all seem to be struggling with.

Once you have come up with three topics that seem to interest a large segment of these people then come back to me and we'll talk.

Thanks Mike, I realise this is not a list of 5000 opted-in people hungry for information about xyz niche, what I'm looking for is a method of converting it into several lists of people with a common interest.

I would be approaching this with extreme caution to avoid damaging her relationships.

For that purpose do a survey where they fill out with their names and or their emails so that you can tell them apart, asking them what their interests are or something similar. Sounds like a good idea to me anyway.

        Nick,

You will wind up with some pretty small lists. But the key is to just listen. Listen to what they are having trouble with or something the get really excited about. Then you can start coming up with ways to quench the thirst, feed the hunger or whatever you wanna call it.

I wouldn't even bother, most of them would probably consider it spam and it would ruin their relationship. Only way I can see it work is like recommending a book or a cd at amazon with her affiliate link in it.

I can't believe there's nothing more creative that can be done. The point is I want to siphon off sub-lists from the big one. If that makes sense.

Long way to go. Apologies for sounding negative, but bear in mind that any "list" you do eventually manage to create out of this stuff, which you can legitimately use for any monetization purposes at all, is going to be a whole lot smaller than it looks now!
You right Alexa, it's not a list of 5000 email addresses but it is still a list which can be used to market to. If they're on myspace or facebook you don't even need their email addresses to communicate with them.

Even if the final list is a small fraction of this, we will have a lot of information about who is on the list that a lot of list owners don't have.

If you provide them valuable content of how to survive in this economy, they will appreciate it. I can bet my life on it. Most people will embrace any help and encouragement they can get. So create a good report with good survival tips.

    here's what I would do...

I would ask your friend to start talking to those people and then when she warms them up a little, I would ask her to ask them for help. The "help" would be a poll with a bribe. Like from surveymonkey or sth.

I would make the post short but would craft the questions in a way that it splits your group int smaller ones.

Then I would survey the smaller ones again to get some product ideas.

    The rest is obvious.

As far as I understand this list contains people who visited a club which your friend promoted. So give these people what they wanted in the first place - club stuff. New openings. Announcements. Clubs should be willing to pay for special promotions to this list.

Another thing that comes to mind - find a place where club promoters hang out and ask them. They should be able to give you much better ideas.

Hi Dimitry, yes you're right, they have that in common but i want to create other list from this list, for example, a list of guys interested in getting ripped or pick up techniques. My friend would continue to promote club events to the master list but I'd have targeted lists i can market to.

    Naoonline,

I was chewing on your question when I was bored and I came up with something that could make you really good money and doesn't involve marketing to those people and losing them as friends.

Don't know if you'll like this idea but here goes.

We're looking for stuff they have in common, right?
We have the club thing, but I'm not focusing on that right now.

One thing all those Facebook friends have in common is that they all use Facebook. That's a niche in and of itself.

So here's what you would do and I'm sure something similar could be done with the Myspace group.

Listen to the kinds of applications they use e.g. you know the poker, or racecar games they play, the chatting or whatever.

See how you could make one of those applications better.

Hire a programmer on rentacoder.com to create the application for you.

Then find a charitable cause that these people would all really care about...I dunno...maybe like research for an HIV cure or something like that.

Then you tell all the friends about the new application. On the download page for the application you have a CPA offer. Something that pays a least a few bucks per action. So let's say they are downloading some toobar and you get paid $3.

On the download page tell them that this toolbar is really cool anyway, but please take a couple minutes to help cure HIV or breast cancer or whatever.

Tell them that for every person who downloads the toolbar you'll donate $1
    to the charitable cause.

You keep $2. You send $1 to the charity.

Encourage them to tell ALL their friends about this and tell them how much we've raised so far for the goal. (Set a goal of how much you want to raise for the charity). They are giving to the charity without having to pay anything. It's the easiest way to give a donation they'll ever see and they get this really cool toolbar and Facebook application.

Make a big stink on Facebook about everyone chipping in to join the cause and before you know it this thing will go viral. Its not uncommon for these applications to be downloaded hundreds and thousands of times. Many will participate in the CPA offer. You can make tens of thousands of dollars and your friend comes out even more popular than she was before.

You have to ask yourself why they are on this list. Why are they friends with this woman?

    They also like clubbing a?
    Clubbing= Music= Ringtone CPA offer.

Remember, Most CPA offers are FREE trials or offers so don't come across as MR.buy-this-from-me, but instead as a friend sharing the same interests and wanting you them not to miss out on such a good offer

Totally a good idea. So I'd replace what I said about a toolbar CPA offer with a ringtone CPA offer. Very good idea.

naonline, give us some more information, what exactly do you want to do with this list you have. What exactly do you want to advertise to these people? Giving out a survey is a very good idea BUT is a horrible idea if you plan to do this on the very first email. I will gladly help a fellow warrior for noting in return but a thank you ;-)!

P.S ... I have found it to be very effective to give out a solid survey right around new years. People begin to think a lot for the new year's resolutions, this is the perfect time to hit them with a survey. I have even seen marketers with lists of 100k emails pull this and it works like a charm!

    I would take this approach...

Send them a free report that teaches them how to do something awesome related to your niche.

At the end, offer a link to some products or services that can help them do this faster (either yours or affiliate links).

The report only needs to be 2-3 pages. Keep it specific and to the point. That way they'll read it, be happy you sent it to them, and you'll see if any bite (as in, is this list worth anything).

If it works you can start ramping it up, but I think a short value-added report with some backend offers is a nice first step transition from "free stuff" to "open your wallets".

And it will take you maybe an hour to write. Not a bad investment of time for a potential gold mine!

Hmm.. Facebook friends - so many ideas.. creating groups - they are all invited.. you get to immediately find out their targets and have niched mailing lists through the facebook group.

            Same with MySpace..

And with both Facebook & MySpace allowing you to create "notes" or "blogs" that their friends will see.. she could just write about what she loves and have links to sites that make her money..

Actually.. a club promotor.. (not sure what that is exactly) but would she be wanting to sell her own services as a club promotor or the clubs? There are probably endless possibilities with this. Does she also have her own blog?

I'd even skip the email addresses anyway (they didn't optin for marketing), and wait for those 6000 friends off facebook/myspace join her niche targeted groups that "are" opt-in to receiving more info..

            Ok bedtime.. zz

Thanks happyches, the niche group is a good idea, kind of like friendfeed rooms I guess. I may have to train my friend quite a bit which I don't have time for at the moment.

BTW - A club promoter is someone who promotes events at clubs based around house/techno/dance music.

          Hey Nick,

I'd go at this either of 2 ways. Either send each of the FaceBook & MySpace folks a message that says "Hey, Check this cool site out" and send them to your site with a free report given for their contact info, and an offer to buy some product...

Or, a take off of what Mike said, get the programer to write you a script for a game (gambling, shoot-em-up, etc...Something addictive!) and give each person 50 free credits per day. When they run out they have 2 options to continue playing. (1.) they can pay $10 and get another 10,000 credits or (2.) they can fill out a few CPA forms/offers and get the extra points for free. Either way, you get paid.

But the approach for either one is to, in a friendly way say, "Hey, check this out". No spam, just a friendly heads up.

A club promoter is basically already somebody who attracts similar leads.
The 1,000 list might be interested in.. going out ! aren't they geographically close to the promoter herself by the way ? There are a lot of brick-and-mortar business that would love to advertise to such a list.
