What are the basics and the best practices of Domain Flipping?

Hello Warriors,

I know the above question sounds more like it came from an MBA student (which I used to be, until about 5 months ago). Anyway, the need here is to understand:

1. What kind of domains do you pick and buy for the sole purpose of flipping them for profit? Do you go by particular "hot" niches or just any niche with a decent market size? Do you go for keyworded domains? [Ok, that was extremely stoopid of ask that despite knowing the 'most' obvious answer... I just poked my eye as a punishment :p]

2. Do you buy just a .com domain or a set of domains of different TLD extensions?

3. Do you purchase a domain and park it on services like Sedo.com or something, until it is sold?

4. What are your favourite marketplaces to flip domains? What pricing methods do you normally apply and the bases (plural of basis) for the same?

5. Do you build a site around a particular domain and monetise it, until it is sold? If so, do you sell the site along too? [Ok, I poked my eye again. So, please excuse my stupidity one more time. ]

6. If you sell the site along, do you offer the site for free along with the domain purchase? What I'm trying to ask is... when you're selling a site along with a domain, it's basically site flipping. But, our idea from the start was to sell the domain. So, is the site a freebie? I understand it depends on the sale price, but you may have other ways to look at it, and I'd like to know about it.

The answers to these questions will help a lot of Warriors that don't have a lot of time on their hands (for whatever reason - a full-time day job in my case) and want to earn some extra income online. Thanks for your views on this, in advance

lol ... I need to write an ebook to answer all those questions and there are multiple answers to most of them. Got a free ebook in my sig if you want to take a look at that.

I just poked my eye as a punishment

Most of the domains that I purchase are keyword domains with a lot of searches

    2. Do you buy just a .com domain or a set of domains of different TLD extensions?

I buy mostly .com, but I also buy others, including .net, .org and recently, a few .co

    3. Do you purchase a domain and park it on services like Sedo.com or something, until it is sold?

A few of them I do, but that's a very passive way of selling domains and can take a long time to get a buyer

    4. What are your favourite marketplaces to flip domains? What pricing methods do you normally apply and the bases (plural of basis) for the same?

I use Sedo and Afternic, but mostly I email possible end users for the domains

    5. Do you build a site around a particular domain and monetise it, until it is sold? If so, do you sell the site along too? [Ok, I poked my eye again. So, please excuse my stupidity one more time. ]

Sometimes I do, and yes ... then it is a site sale rather than just a domain sale

    6. If you sell the site along, do you offer the site for free along with the domain purchase? What I'm trying to ask is... when you're selling a site along with a domain, it's basically site flipping. But, our idea from the start was to sell the domain. So, is the site a freebie? No, the site is not free. It normally has value by iteself

    Here are my Inputs:

I just poked my eye as a punishment ]

I usually buy long tail keyworded domains, again with a lot of search traffic. I also buy expired domain names with existing backlinks if any.

    2. Do you buy just a .com domain or a set of domains of different TLD extensions?

Usually, its a mix of all.

    3. Do you purchase a domain and park it on services like Sedo.com or something, until it is sold?

Sometimes i park it or sometimes i develop the domain into a Niche Website. I use Domainsponsor.com or Voodoo.com for parking.

    4. What are your favourite marketplaces to flip domains? What pricing methods do you normally apply and the bases (plural of basis) for the same?

Flippa is considered the best platform, but one could also use Warriorforum Classifieds, Digital Point Marketplace or even try their luck with Ebay.

    5. Do you build a site around a particular domain and monetise it, until it is sold? If so, do you sell the site along too? [Ok, I poked my eye again. So, please excuse my stupidity one more time. ]

Really depends, if i develop a site around a domain name, i ofcourse sell the complete website with the domain name. It totally depends what you want to do.

    6. If you sell the site along, do you offer the site for free along with the domain purchase? What I'm trying to ask is... when you're selling a site along with a domain, it's basically site flipping. But, our idea from the start was to sell the domain. So, is the site a freebie? You can either sell:
    • A Domain Only
    • Complete Website with Domain.

    Both have their own worth.

Remember, any asset that you build around the domain, possess a Value - so, your content, design - they all hold a value. You need to put a price on that too. A lot of people also build Social Media assets build around the domain name - such as Videos, Apps, twitter pages, facebook pages and list them the entire package for sale.

Your best reference: Check out this Auction of Flippa, Review the kind of assets the seller is selling in her auction. This is an Unsold Auction although.

    Hope this Helps!

I've actually made at lot of money in the last 2 years buying domains / sites from the us market and selling them to the Scandinavian market. There is some "inbalance" where people in will pay more for a certain type of sites than they are on the english speaking market. It could be because 50 000 visitors per month isn't a big deal in the US while it would be a huge site in for example Norway. So my flipping strategy is to simply identify the difference in the site market between different countries.

Interesting, but what marketplace are you selling them in that's focused on the Scandinavian market?
