Marketing where did i go wrong?

A website i've been working on for a 18 months was initially doing ok with enquires. No real keyword work was used. I worked on certain keywords the owners wanted me to rate for and all enquires stopped. I managed a top ten in google for certain terms but still no increase in enquires. Is there any way of finding out how people initially found our site? before the work i did that dried up enquires.

    Do you use a software like Google Analytics to track your website visitors? If so you should be able to go back months (or even years, depending on how long you had the code installed) and look at where your visitors were coming from at that time.
