can someone tell me how 1 and 1 can advertise like this on my own server?

I was checking to see if one of my sites got indexed yet in goole when Iran acroos this advertisment by 1 and 1.

The funny thing is, it links to my site at the bottom where URLs are usually placed.

Here's the advert:

Web hosting, domain name registration and web services by 1&1 InternetTry our Partner http://www . Sedo . com Buy, Sell, Appraise and Auction Domain Names at Sedo, the #1 domain name aftermarket, broker, reseller, and appraiser!. Choose your own 1&1 website hosting package or domain! 1&1 Domain Name Registration - .com, .net, .org, .name, .us, .info, ...
my domain is here . com/ - 7k - Cached - Similar pages
My site is running in public view using the domain name, but I can only access my cpanel and FTP by using the IP address.

Does anyone have any ideas on how I happen to get 1 and 1 advertising on my domain?

I'm thinking it has to be some type of script they are running but ...

Thanks ...

Unfortunately, a lot of hosting companies are doing this these days. Mainly they do it to subsidize free hosting packages. Basically, the ads are injected by the webserver as it's streaming content back to you, so there's not a whole lot you can do about it. I hope this is free hosting, otherwise they are profiting off of your hard work. (BTW, there has been some talk that this is a violation of the DMCA, eg. modifying your content for the purposes of profit, but I'm not a lawer, so I don't know the full status of that.) Hope that helps.

    Mary,

If you are paying for hosting at 1and1, and they are doing this...
I'd first ask them to stop. If they didn't stop, I'd check the T&C and
if it wasn't stated that they were going to do that, I would cease
hosting with them, and file a charge-back for breach of contract.

Even if they have it in their T&C, I'd still leave 'em...

    Be Well!

    Hi xanol and Dave ...

No, I am hosting on my own VPS, so it has nothing to do with free hosting.

This is one of the reasons I asked about it. It doesn't seem legal to me.

I don't see how they can modify my content. It's on my server, unless they redirected my domain somehow. This might be why I can't use my own domain to get into my cpanel and FTP.

I did contact their support to reem them out a bit. Hoping they get back to me about that matter because I'm fixing to get a lawyer to see what can be done about it.

Btw, they just did an update, so I wonder if this was it.

I appreciate your response. At least I know it's going on someplace else.

    Anyone have any suggestions?

    Thanks ...

    Mary,

I think what you are saying is that the ad you saw...

was on Google, and the URL at the bottom pointed back to your site.

You say you can type in the domain name and see the sight, is this content you have actually put up on the site?

You also say that you can only access ftp and cpanel through the ip address rather than using the domain name, this sounds like there may be some issues with your DNS setup.

Yes, it sounds like there may be an issue with your DNS if this was a google listing.

Did you by chance just move this site or change its IP?

Mary, I just had this problem. It does have to do with the hosting company and the way they set it up. Submit a ticket and ask that it be changed so you can access your Cpanel using your domain name and not the IP address.

    Hey James and LB,

No, I do not have content in this site about this information. I wouldn't advertise 1and1 for love nor money.

I double checked the DNS settings in my backend and they are set up ok there.

LB, nope didn't just move the site or change IPs. The site is about 2-3 weeks old.

    Hey Glenn,

    ok, I'll try that.

Just for the record, I did contact 1 and 1, and they said there is no such advertisment going on on their end, and the search listing does not exist.

    What a crock!

Thanks fellas for the feedback. It's appreciated.

Sedo is normally used for parking pages, Someone may have parked this domain with them in the past. I am curious, if I typed in your domain name, What content would I see?

      Mary,

If you've had the site up for a couple of weeks and can still say

"My site is running in public view using the domain name, but I can only access my cpanel and FTP by using the IP address."

there is clearly something wrong at a deeper level than just the ad.

VPS can be hard to configure. I would look for a problem there, with your nameservers or with the forwarding from Godaddy or whoever you use.

I think the problem is setup related as well. I use 1&1 for many sites and have never had a problem like this. I've used shared and dedicated servers but not VPS. You should look at that setup first.

    James,

    PM sent, and thanks!

    Pearson and Rich,

Am looking into it. I have a support ticket in with the host and registrar.

I know the DNS settings a set up right. I triple checked those so ...

    Thanks for your comments.

    Mary

    Edit

James found out the domain was originally parked at SEdo, so I now have that advertisment thing taken care of.

    Thanks James!

Just to close the issue, the google listing is just the remnants of a page that was parked at 1&1 servers, it should eventually get "overtaken" by relevant content.

As far as cpanel and ftp this should definitely be taken up with the server.
