Possibly the end of the Aussie Internet Censorship?

Most of us have probably already heard about the Aussie government shutting down the free internet filter software program, and instead deciding they want to censor the whole internet at ISP level.

The good news is that it looks like it won't survive:

Coalition to dump internet filter - Yahoo!7

Liberals and Greens are opposing it, which means hopefully the money that would have been wasted on this can be spent on doing something that will actually make a difference.

So if Liberals get it, the filter is scrapped. If Labor get in, then at least it should be able to be blocked anyway. Hopefully.

I know this is borderline political, and so borderline "against the rules" of this forum, but since an internet filter has the ability to affect our businesses, I assume it's okay to post?

cheers
Sam

Yeah I'm in two minds about that, though. Sure, optical fibre would rock, but I'm sure we've got better things to spend money on. ADSL 2 is pretty fast, and it's supported by private business rather than tax payers.

Unfortunatly we live in a REALLY big country that doesn't have very many people in it, and so providing services such as internet is much more expensive over here than a country such as England that has a tonne of people in a much smaller area.

I think when politicians dabble in technology, nothing good can come of it

      cheers

Haha, you're so right Danny - I think most of Australia are thinking the same thing: "What? You mean I have to choose one?!"

But have they also stopped the plan to log our browser activity?
To me that's more disturbing than a filter.

They see the dollars rolling before their eyes so you can bet they will do something.

Politicians have become professionals in that go straight from uni to politics.

The Day Jonny Howard said he was giving Indonesia money instead of on behalf of the Australian people was the day Politics became a corporation rather than government for the people.

We will all soon see anyway.

That could happen and anytime. And then no one will use the internet for anything. :-)

As Sam said I'm not too fussed about the fibre optic stuff. The current speeds are all pretty good and most companies have good bandwidth limits now (As opposed to 6+ months ago when it was like 30GB/month max with some companies).

As long as the censorship stuff gets thrown out and we never hear of it again I'm happy.

There won't be any national network, but Primus already started building its optical fiber network in Melbourne, so if you live in one of these fancy new gated communities in Brunswick or Northcote you have access to it, but it will be at least 10 years before it is rolled out into the metro

Telstra should never have been privatized.

Yea I think it might be the end of the censorship, gizmodo has gotten pretty vocal about it and to some extent spurred the techies into action.

Re: the NBN, as much as I love the idea I think that it probably won't go to plan sadly, and just end up a big ol waste of time and cash.

Gillard's new slogan is "Moving forward - whilst shooting oneself in the foot". Oops - that's political comment. I'd better stop. But really, have you read the transcript of what Stephen Conroy has said about the internets? Face palm.

Bahahah. That guy is such a tool. Remember when he got caught for tampering with the 'Tagging tool cloud' on his website, where his developers purposely took out the words "Censorship". Bahahahhahaha!

By the way, its alreadys squashed. Coalition have dropped it.

        Victory!

Bit of a bender last night Pat lol

There have been rumors going around that the big porn shop in ACT has some CCTV footage of some persons from the house that should they decide to go ahead with the stupid Conroy rule they would make it Public

Being that I am good mates with a State NLP member this may not be a rumor

        Off do some fishing

I personally don't think that anyone will give up on control. Everyone wants a piece of the cake.

Money is the old fashion here. Power is what seems to be the biggest niche.

Giving up on censorship is like removing cameras from cross roads, streets, and important buildings. For some people : unacceptable.
