Fitness website disclaimer/legal

Some websites I have been to involving the exercise and fitness niche have a very simple disclaimer like this one.

Consult with your doctor before starting any exercise program. All opinions expressed on this site are solely my own. Read all nutrition labels and supplement labels before starting use. Ask your doctor about taking supplements before you start doing so. I am not a professional trainer, nutritionist, or dietitian. Always seek professional advice before engaging in any physical activity.

Other ones have very long ones with sections. And the writing will refer to other sections. I am pending approval for amazon affiliate, will they give me a disclaimer that I have to use? Like one that might mention there are 3rd party links on the site.

Thanks, Brian

That is fairly routine. It has been for well over a decade! In fact, this one seems a bit more honest!

The reason for longer, legal documents, written in legalese is to make the information be absolutely unambiguous.

Certain legal terms have specific meanings, and by using this language, the document spells out exactly what is meant to the court.

I am not an attorney, nor do I play one anywhere. I do know, writing a disclaimer yourself can create problems. Lawyers earn a pretty penny trying to straighten out the mistakes made by those of us who are not attorneys – and doing so for us after the fact because we didn’t get it right the first time.

As an affiliate, you'll need to include whatever verbiage the vendor requires, but if they provide you with a generic disclaimer, that's all it is. It is not tailored to you or your specific circumstances. It does not cover whatever other information you may present on your site. If it comes from a vendor, it is likely designed to cover whatever is necessary for the affiliate relationship as well as specifics for the product but not necessarily for the other information you will have on your site--information and content that did not come from the vendor.

If you want a proper disclaimer, contact a lawyer. Don't go by what other sites do. You don't know if they have a long or short disclaimer because that is what their lawyer came up with or because they wrote it themselves or copied it from someone else.

Contact a lawyer. Discuss the specifics of your site. Provide them with anything the vendor requests or requires be included on your site. Tell the lawyer your plans, the type of content you will use, the source of that content, and so on. Then, the lawyer can develop a disclaimer that covers you.
