What is the best time / day to mail your list?

Essentially:

1. What is the best DAY to mail your list and what do you mail?

Am trying to come up with some sort of schedule - this is what I am thinking:

Mon - Article (pure content)
Tues - JV
Weds - Article promo
Thurs - [open]
Fri - Pure promo
Sat - Article promo
Sun - Video

2. What is the best TIME?

I like around 9.30AM EST as it's early afternoon in Europe and early morning in North America

...appreciate the best answer here is "test, test..and test" but as I do this thought I'd ask if anyone has any experiences they could share with the forum?

Thanks

I think you'll find that you get lots of different answers depending on niche, geography etc.

Personally, I prefer to send mail so that it arrives at the start of the work day because:

    (a) People tend to check their email then.

    (b) They haven't yet got bogged down in the day's challenges.

I often find that many people then consider the email for the rest of the day before taking the required action at the end of the day.

Best days - Tuesday and Thursday.

    Cheers,

I used to follow this line of thinking myself... but then I discovered (may just be a small niche that does this, but I needed to heed it) that it's easier for people to mass delete mail in the morning to "start the work day fresh"... and after dinner and work in the evening, people generally pay attention to their mail more closely because a leisurely night is ahead of them and not a full work day. Just food for thought....

Yes, if your mailing list is going world wide, there's no way to arrange everyone getting the mail at a "good time" and it just causes stress worrying about it. So good choice to not think about it... there are much better things to do.

    Holla,

I love to list & send it mostly on weekend i.e. Fridays, when most of the clients are about to complete their schedule work & they are ready to start with a new activity on next week.

As per marketers view, the best time of the day is the mid part when people are in their work with full concentration.

In view of weekend mailing activity, it also helps in approaching clients which do look for their weekend mails with more relevance.

I assume you are signed up to multiple lists. See where your slow periods are in your mailbox and then send out the news then. For me it is the weekend.

Agreed - in terms of frequency sounds like anything more than 5 days/week is over the top in IM

    Would anyone agree/disagree with this?

This is actually a very commonly asked question with a lot of varying answers to it from different parties.

Fact is though, there is no one size fits all answer since all lists vary for so many reasons that it would be impossible and impractical to even suggest a best day/time unless you have specific, unbiased test results from tests on a cross section of list members in a particular niche, over an extended period of time. Anything else is a guesstimate at best and bad advice at worst.

Personally, I don't much care. I send my emails out and assume that the people who subscribed did so because they want to read my emails and that the emails I'm sending are worth their time to check at their earliest convenience. If I have time sensitive material to share I prepare my list members ahead of time to expect it on X day/date at X time (usually GMT). That way people are expecting the email(s) and will make a mental note to go out of their way to check it if the topic/offer really interests them. And this has worked very well indeed for me.

Otherwise as I said, I pretty much just send my emails out and leave the checking to those who really are interested to do so.

If you're however keen on knowing the best days and times for YOUR list, here's a suggestion I have made on some blogs in the recent past...

Use the list segmentation feature in your autoresponder system to put people on lists that suit their needs regarding the best day and time to reach them.

You will know what suits them when you do one thing no one seems to ever suggest when it comes to this question about best days and times to email your lists and that is to ASK THEM... after all they know this info better than you.

So, build as much of a generalized segmentation as you can for each preference. What I mean is... You could have a Monday List for Europeans and Tuesday Lists for North Americans and so on, on each of these lists, you'd then offer to send emails between set times such as Monday Between 7 - 9 AM European Time and so on...

To build a system like this is probably back breaking and impractical which is probably why no one does it, but if I were really determined, this is what I'd do, it might take time to set it up, but the rewards might actually outweigh the time you put into setting this up.

Some autoresponder services now allow you to preset the exact days and/or dates and times you want to send out emails to specific lists, so this could be used once you have your list properly segmented. One of the services I use will let you set the day to mail out such as "Only mail list XYZ on Mondays", a good search will turn up autoresponder services that offer even more on point segmentation strategies than merely the latter.

Hope that helps you somewhat. If you need further help regarding my advice, feel free to PM me.

    Many Cheers,

Here is a secret of when to email your list and what kind of emails get opened up more.

I got this from a very successful internet marketer.

    1. The best time to email your list is at 2:00PM eastern time.

    2. The best emails that get opened are emails that have:

5 Ways to Get people to open your emails.

So if you use 3 ways to or 10 ways to then this will get more of your subscribers to open your emails more.

    Hope this helps.

Thanks Tal - what do you mean by "5 ways to get people to open your emails", are you referring to calls to action in the email?

Thuesday - Thursday and I would say around 10AM; if you are promoting dating or anything of that nature, then after 7pm and weekends work very well.

    Whatever you do,
let your customer know ahead of time when
    and what to expect.
While testing may be necessary to you, it can
confuse or anger your list if you are not somewhat consistent.

There are many theories on the "best" time/day to mail.

There is a theory that if you mail out at 3am-4am EST, your mail will be the first in many people's inbox when they read their email in the morning, and also your mail will drop in just nice for the UK audience when they are just turning on their computers, at around 8am-9am.

And I can vouch that it works. When I have sent offers at that time, I got a ton of sales from the UK. And as most established email marketers will know, most of the sales will be generated in the first 1-24 hours, especially the first few hours.

Then again, I have also sent offers at that time that didn't work. The offer is still the key.

Others have also reported increased click-throughs and sales when they mail at 12 midnight to 2am EST. That's because that is the quiet period, when no one else is mailing. It is a competition-free zone. I did this a few times a few years ago and didn't get as many clicks, but got better conversions. Without all the clutter hammering the inbox at that time, people have more time to go through your offer.

Most of the launches in the IM niche start at around 11am-12pm EST; this is to avoid the morning clutter and get the afternoon crowd. As many people who have worked at a job will tell you, they get most of their work out of the way in the morning, and slack away in the afternoon, waiting to clock out, so they have a lot of time to read emails in the afternoon.

Another good time is 4pm EST (1pm PST), you cover the whole spectrum of the afternoon across the US and reach people in California and Washington just after lunch.

Night time EST can also work well, few people are mailing at that time, but the TV does beckon for many.

Best days - I will subscribe to the rule of Tuesdays and Thursdays but have had success on the other weekdays.

Weekends - Saturday is generally a poor day for many, as people start going out in the afternoon, although morning can still work. Sunday afternoon onwards is workable, as many people are attending church in the morning.

To sum up, timing does play a part, but the key is still the offer. A bad offer will not do well when it is mailed at any time, but a good offer will still sell whichever time the email is sent out.

It's also hard to tell which is the "best" day for all your emails unless you are sending the same offer, same email, every week, have the exact same amount of new leads per week (with no sudden burst of new leads). And even then, will the people who have clicked through last week be as responsive this week to the exact same offer? Subject line is another factor. Email, unlike website testing, often doesn't generate accurate testing results that you can say with 100% certainty that is the "best" time and day to mail.

My policy is not to stick to a rigid routine, but mix up the times for different emails, since I email often, you don't want subscribers to able to predict when you will mail. Be unpredictable. Also, you reach different audiences at different times.

A weekly email newsletter will benefit better from a set timing every week.

      Thanks for the insight Fabian

Interesting...I've read about guys mentioning mailing (roughly) always at the same time so that people get used to receiving your email and expect it.

But I do get your point about catching different time zones...
