I need some Monetization Ideas

When I first started my site, I thought it was going to be a goldmine of AdSense money - that revenue sharing was going to convince my website members to contribute a lot and tell everyone they knew to look at their submissions and content. I was very naive. Now, the site is still pretty new - only two months old today. I'm getting around 300-400 page views a day, and slightly growing. Sometimes, I'll get a click worth over $3.00, but usually, I don't get any clicks at all. In fact, sometimes I will go six or seven days in a row without making any money from AdSense.

So what are some other monetization ideas? The site is a social, web 2.0 site, so I can't just use it as a squeeze page or start selling products (at least, I don't think it would work right...). I have started using my site to post dozens of articles a day (like a blog), and then backlink to those individual pages (about 40 bookmarks over time for each article) in hopes of getting more search engine traffic, and converting page views to clicks.

Currently, I could sell advertising space - but I don't think anyone would want to advertise on my site because of the low amount of traffic.

Is there any way for me to make money with this site, or do I just need to start a new one?

P.S.: Sorry if this is the wrong forum for this thread - I figured since I'm looking to get AWAY from relying on AdSense, it would make more sense to post here.

Affiliate sales? Depending on your niche market, I am sure there is a product on clickbank you can promote with a simple link, if you don't want to place a big banner on your site.

But, $3 per click sounds great though for adsense. I am assuming it is forex, real estate or make money niche.

It changes every hour! My site is a social bookmarking / article writing site, so there really isn't much of a niche that I can create. I just get lucky sometimes and get Ads that are worth a lot of money, depending on the bookmarks that are on the front page at the time.

You could just build a few more of these sites if adsense is what you're looking to make your money in.

      Very interesting so far.

I'm not quite sure how I will sell affiliate products on my site, aside from writing articles about the products with the affiliate link in them, and then trying to get that article ranked and get traffic. I guess I just answered my own question...

Any other ideas? I would be really curious to know how digg or similar sites got started, and how long it took them to get to the point where they are now- up to $25,000 an ad on their site. Without investors, or a lot of money to drop on some serious marketing, I have no idea how I could ever grow a site that large and that engaging, where people are knocking down the door to advertise.

They had to have the money coming in one way or another at first. Right? Right now, I'd just like to be able to make around $400 a month to cover student loan payments, so if I'm ever at the point where I can sell serious advertising, I'll have met my goal many times over.

I would recommend you to try something new. New placement on adsense ads until you find what fits you most.

    also what's you CTR?

Hey Seekyt, I know your site (I am the #3 person to join lol)

I guess the only thing to do is get volume of visitors coming everyday for everything and try to get more stuff being posted than peoples own links..

    News, music, reviews...

Are people actually backlinking their articles on seekyt or mooching off your page rank? Because I guess that is the key...once those articles start ranking then your page views will go up. Right now I am guessing the only reason you are seeing a trickle is because others are only using your site to point back to hubpages, squidoo and the rest.

Can you do a referral like hubpages does?
The more people that come and interact the more money people make?

By the way, I do not know where you are looking but I do not see any adsense anywhere?

Sparhawke! I knew I recognized that name!

I have no idea how you are not seeing AdSense ads. They are all over the site - there is a big image ad (large square) in the top right corner, a large banner toward the bottom of the sidebar, a 460x80 ad under the first post on the home page, and on story pages there is a small link unit added on the right side and an image ad at the bottom of posts. I certainly hope this isn't a recurring theme for many people, since it is a revenue sharing site... that would be a disappointment.

As far as a referral program, that is something I have wanted to implement since day one, but I just can't figure out the coding for it. I was offered by a programmer to have a script built for referral programs, but that would cost $500 that I don't have. Since the site is based on Pligg, existing scripts will not work - I would need something VERY similar to HubPages' referral script. It WOULD be the best thing for viral type growth, though.

I am going to continue writing articles, and start posting reviews, etc., to try and gain some traffic from the search engines.

I have been sending out weekly emails to all users, but it seems that only 10% of people actually read the emails. I have offered a $20 contest to write an article about my site (it's cheap, but I thought it would be effective - I would have written an article to compete for $20), and no one is participating. I have offered to give users 100% revenue sharing if they write one unique article on my site; no takers.

Last night, someone DID finally write an article on my site (and it was the first thing they did after they joined! they didn't even bookmark anything). I guess I'll just have to keep trying until more people join. I would REALLY like to make my site a simple, clean, all in one site - like digg meets Xomba meets infobarrel, but easier to navigate. I just need members to actually use all the features, and not only use the site for bookmarks!

If anyone has any more advice, I'd love to hear it!

You can see advertising based on your traffic. What is your PR?

Well, I finally got to a PR1 a couple of days ago (though some sources are still saying its a PR0), but that's mostly because the site is still new and not all links are pointing back to my site yet. I should be at least a PR2 by the end of the year. I wish I knew the exact formulas for page rank so I could optimize better. All I know about PR is that it is somehow based on the number of backlinks.

Put a link on your page for a "Special Offer" for some niche product where your main page compliments this must have ebook, or whatever.

They click on the link, go to your landing page, add their email, an idea affiliated with your ebook of your whatever ebook goes to them...then you can drag it out for a week with those tantalizing daily updates giving them a paragraph at a time.

The link of great joy and happiness...but this one? This is the one that all window cleaning companies in the free world are inspired by. Hey, where did the sarcasm font go?
