In a video from matt cutts, he talks about building links by participating in social media as facebook and twitter. Okay, you make an account on Twitter and/or Facebook, and then....

How do you really get those backlinks to your website with social media?

Should you first become a famous person or an expert on twitter and if so, how do you become a popular person so that people will start following you, visit your website and will link to your website?

You can see Matt Cutt's tip in the video on this webpage on 3:45 minutes. So take a look at the video and start watching at 3:45 min. to see what I mean. Thanks.

I may be wrong but I think the "building" part is the cut-and-dry version of building backlinks that marketers think of...

I would betcha that what he is saying is as you "brand" yourself, others link to you...that is the natural progression of backlinking...

I think you are right. Building Backlinks by getting knowed by the community on Twitter. But how do you "brand yourself" on social media websites then?
By providing useful content to the community? If so, can't that be seen as spamming the social media sites as you fill the sites with your content?

No, your "branding" doesn't necessarily have to be an blatant advertisement pointing back to your property. It is just by hanging around and being "seen."

Think about it this way....I see the same people reviewing WSO products (the testimonials) in the offers. You see their name, their face and sometimes a website.

If you are into marketing products and you see the same person again and again in the ad, dontcha think that that could be an influencer if that person created a product themselves?

I think branding in social media sites is the same thing. In a sense, you are simply becoming an entity in the platform and market simply by hanging around.
