Paypal Blocks $1,000 Payment?

I have a (offline) client that is trying to pay me using paypal for the amount of $1,000 but paypal is blocking the use of his credit card for some reason? It just says something like for some reason this transaction cant be paid for by credit card and you need to use you bank account instead.

Has anyone had this problem before?

I tried requesting payment via email, I tried creating a buy now button, but nothing works?

I did set it up as a service. Should I set it up as a product instead?

Thanks fellow warriors.

I had a similar problem a few months ago when I was trying to pay $3000 in one shot.

Broke it down to $1500 twice and it went fine. Maybe that could work for you.

  • I am just wondering - Paypal has three levels - I think the first one does have a limit on the level of annual transactions and it is pretty low. I use the premium (middle level) and have had no problems.

    Hope this helps.

I don't think that being a "service" vs a "product" is going to make a difference. I'm guessing that you haven't had a payment this big in your account before? PayPal may have limited the amount you can accept iin one transaction.

Other than having him break it down into multiple payments the best recourse is to phone PayPal. I call them often (in my case it's because I work in 2 countries) and they are always very helpful.

Other than what the above posters have suggested, the only thing that comes to mind is that maybe this person has a limit on his/her credit card per transaction??

Thanks guys and this account is about 3 months old and the biggest transaction had been one at $750 and another at $500. But I hadnt had alot of transactions on this account, so that might be it. I have a business account and verified it.

    I will call paypal today.

    Thanks again warriors.

The problem appears to be with the customer's paypal account - not with yours.

It may be a personal account with limits or may be the credit card he is attempting to use that is the problem. If you call - they won't give info about his account to you.

I've had this problem a few times before. If you break the payment down into $500 twice then it should go through.

I also had this problem with my premiere account when my card was close to expiration or had expired. They would not let me use a credit card - even a different one - only my back account. so you're user may be facing something like that too. Have them check their card status for limits and expiration date.

My client had contacted paypal and told me they said it was because it was a new card. I lowered the payment to $250 for him and it went through. Now I just need to do that 3 more times :-(

I would suggest you to ask your client to break the payment in like $500 ones.

    Maybe, should work.

The issue here is definitely your client's Paypal account, and not yours. It could be any combination of factors, ranging from a fairly new Paypal account that hasn't been fully verified to the type of account and/or card. At least you're prepared now if you run into this same scenario with a future payment from a client.

I had a problem making a purchase using my credit card, it turned out that you normally only have one card linked to your email address so it is important to be aware of this fact and use only that specific credit card or add additional cards to your paypal account. The other factors to be aware of are mentioned above.
The only other realistic way is to obtain payment is with a merchant account which will be more costly!

Paypal confirmed this when I called.

Might be my next step. But paypal is just so damn simple (usually). Also they answer the phone pretty quick when I called customer service. That used to never happen a few years ago.
