Internet Old-timers Question about Marketing Newsletters

This question is for those who, like me, remember the days when being online meant dialing up to CompuServe, AOL or Prodigy.

Do you know of any marketing e-newsletters that have been published continuously since 1998 or earlier?

There is Larry Chase's WDFM; Paul Myers' TalkBiz; my own Marketing Minute; perhaps Ralph Wilson's newsletter (I need to ask him when he started)...

Any others?

Thanks for any leads!

Kirt Christensen's "A Scientific Marketing Newsletter" was first published in 1997, and I believe it has evolved into a membership site called NetBreakthroughs (dot com).

There are many newsletters that meet your publishing date criterion, and a quick way to find them is through a search within the Directory of Ezines. Although you can't search by date, you can search by topic, and you'll get a list of ezines/newsletters, each of which you'll have to click on in order to see the "First Published" date. I just did a bit of searching, and there are a few marketing ones that go back as far as 1980!

      Marcia,

The ones I know of that have been published via email regularly since 1996 include newsletters by Jim Daniels, Ralph Wilson and myself. I would love to have an authoritative list of whoever may have gone through the challenges since then.

There are a bunch of people who've left the field and come back, but those are the only ones I can think of off hand who've ground it out for all those years. A whole lot of people have been in and out of the business over that time, and more have changed publishing patterns, but those are the three I recall.

A LOT of people came up very quickly after that. There was Kelly Kalcheim's "Network marketing tip of the day," Terry Dean's "Web Gold is Here," and more. And none of this should take away from Jonathan Mizel's groundbreaking "Online Marketing Letter." Brilliant stuff, in every issue.

Is Larry still publishing "Web Digest for Marketers?" If so, I need to send him a bottle of good single malt Scotch, to celebrate his Auldtimer's onset.

It's been an interesting ride, so far.

Yes, Larry Chase is still publishing. I looked him up over the weekend and his latest issue at that time was quite a good one. Looks like he has a lot of corporate clients.

Can you pinpoint what year you started publishing TalkBiz?

I believe that's always been his main focus. He was one of th first people to put a stamp of professionalism on online publishing.

Different name at the beginning, but the first issue was December 7, 1996.

IIRC, Ken started the SiteSell newsletter in Q1 or Q2 of 1999. My first communication with him on "Make Your Site Sell" was in May of 1999. I was introduced to the product by Matt Hockin, before Ken even had his first affiliate manual completed.

Looking through those archives, it appears that Allan Gardyne's "Associate Programs" newsletter started around late May of 1998. If you want to talk about some classy people, Ken and Allan are up there with anyone I know.

Speaking of which, Jim and Audri Lanford started Scambusters in 94 or 95, I think. I'm not sure if it's been continuously published over that time, but you could ask Audri. (Marcia: I'm pretty sure you have her contact info.

Another early one was Patrick Douglas Crispen's "Internet Tourbus." Not an IM thing, but one of the most educational publications around at the time. His squirrel stories had a big impact on my writing style in the early days. As did the conversations on Glen Fleishman's "Internet Marketing Discussion List."

A lot of things got their start on/around Glen's list. I remember Jeff Bezos talking about his wacky idea for an online bookstore in that group. That's where I first encountered Audri, John Audette, Sanford Wallace, Adam Boettiger, Shel Horowitz, Chris "Sparky" Knight (I think) and a bunch of other people.

Sparky could probably give you a lot of pointers on this subject if you asked. He and Vince Sabio. IIRC, they ran the list-moderators discussion list back in the day.

Oh... If you want to speak to the first person to do commercial - as in, paid - email publishing, Randy Cassingham of This is True is your guy.

Harvey Segal got started in 1998, with Supertips. About 6 months after Allan Started AssociatePrograms.com. And about 4 years after Jakob started his web usability studies. (There's an interesting character for you.

Oh, hell. How could I forget... Corey started MarketingTips.com in 1994. Not sure when he started regular email publishing, but Derek Gehl could give you exact details on that. It's been pretty much continuously published since the start, I believe.

Just checked... Ralph got started in 95. Not sure when the email version of WMT fired up, but he's been around at least that long. And he's definitely been going strong the whole time.

Another surprise is Dan O'Day, who's been at it since 1997. Our own Steve Yankee has been doing the online thing since about the time I started, too, and he's been at it fairly consistently.

Paul Lemberg had a newsletter back then, but I believe he dropped it for a while. Too bad, too, as he's always had some of the better thinking to offer.

Good grief... Even then, there was a lot going on. This discussion makes me feel like I've gone back in a time machine...

There certainly was! I still run into people who remember me from CompuServe or Prodigy, starting in 1993.

But I didn't start my newsletter till some years after that. When I did, most web hosts and ISPs did not know what I was talking about when I went hunting for a way to deliver a weekly newsletter by email. We used functions that were designed for discussion lists and used settings so that only I could send messages to the list.

Thanks, Paul, for the additional info and leads.

I may be getting them confused, but i think I was part of a discussion site that Ken had before he put out MYSS and MYKS... (I still have the first version of both of those somewhere)... I think I used to go to IMDL too... Its all a blur now. I was helping a buddy run an email discussion group that turned into a big website about real estate investing. I was helping with all the tech and marketing stuff so I was on all the groups trying to learn - that was back in 1997... Its amazing how much of this stuff is the same 13 years later.

Strangely enough, I can't locate the early issues of my

My ebook about ezine publishing, "Ezine Launch", was 1st
published in March 2000. I'm pretty sure my marketing
