Have I Just Struck Gold??

Just been doing some keyword research. Found an item of clothing keyword with 300,000 global monthly searches and only 47,000 "allintitle" competing sites. Is this a good ratio? I'm thinking maybe yes, but I need your opinions!

Thanks

Check out who is in the top 10 spots. Check their page ranks, domain age, back links etc. Can you beat them now? Could you beat them with some work?

This is what really matters, although the exact title matches count is useful for broad filtering of a bunch of keywords to find the gold.

Most of the competition is info sites like Wikipedia, answers.com, wiseguy etc. Only 2 retail sites and they're not particularly strong.

It depends. Did you use exact match search? Also you should look at the local monthly search count too.

47,000 allintitle competing websites is relative, how many of the top 10 results on broad match search are using the title tags correctly?

There's more to analysing competition than the allintitle search. Try allinanchor too.

      Hi Eleanor

I used the Exact match search. I just tried allinanchor, and there's 942,000+ results. I don't know what this search means, never used it before.

        Hi

You really need to analyse just the top 10 competing websites. Check out the yahoo site explorer to find out how many backlinks there are to each of the competing sites.

You'll also want to look at pagerank and the kind of site. Wikipedia will be reasonably hard to outrank unless you have good knowledge of on and off page seo.

Not sure ... I always shy away when I see heavy hitters like Wikipedia in there, but maybe I am wrong on that.

What is important is the page rank of the the specific listed page. If your keyword is Bastille Day then your WikiPedia competition is a PR6 page for example. Yikes!

It is your call though, plus you know the KW so you can see all 10. Maybe worth going for if 5 are easily beatable so you can get in the top 10 somewhere.

I am not sure how true it is but a lot of marketers talk about the lion share of clicks going to the #1 spot so bear that in mind. The searches per day have to be shared by each of the top 10 spots, the 11+ spots, adverts, and the "back button", "close button" and occasional power cut. Some surfers do check out more than one result though.

It is almost impossible to shake websites like wikipedia Google just prefer them. Although I still believe you could get in at least 1st page but don't expect a lot of traffic. Depending on your keyword most of people may get satisfied by wikipedia or answers.com
