Anyone done IM in this era was it a heck of a lot easier to make money because compition was so low? I heard some people say they put any old keywords in a ad words campaign and made tons of cash.

    It was also...

Super hard to find anything (no Google or EzineArticles)
Super hard to hire anyone to do anything (no oDesk)
Expensive to setup a membership site (no software for it)
A pain in the butt to optimize for Internet Explorer and Netscape, and there was no video standard, no social media, no webinars

I like internet marketing in 2010 way better than in 2000.

There are also a ton more people online these days, so that is nice...

There were advantages then, but there are also advantages now. Can't go back, so we might as well work with what we've got.

      No site builders
      No paypal
      No fast, easy wordpress blogs
No tutorials on "how to do..."
      no broadband
relatively few people had home computers
$70-80 bucks to register a domain name

they put any old keywords in a ad words campaign and made tons of cash
Advertising first appeared on Google.com in January 2000 — text ads were sold by a sales rep on a CPM basis. (Yes, that’s right, there was no pay-per-click, no self-serve, no bidding.)

Some of what you hear may be a case of the older we get, the better we were.:p

(I didn't get my first computer until 2000 - but there are some members here who were pros by then).

Dear April: I don't want any trouble from you.
January was long, February was iffy, March was a freaking dumpster fire.
So sit down, be quiet, and don't touch anything.

A lot more people are willing to buy something online now than there were back then, too. I remember when I started online back in 1999, everyone I knew was completely freaking out because I shopped online so much. Now it's normal for a lot of people so you have a much broader market today.

I remember people freaking out about shopping online, and also what a stigma it was to go out on a date with someone you met online. Now look at what a HUGE niche online dating is!
