Why do some popular searches on Google have no Ads?

For example, "google" and "sex" are two terms that have virtually no advertisements. When you type "ebay" on google, the only Google Ads is ebay.com itself. There is no way no one is advertising thre, sow hats the deal? Is it restricted by Google Adwords?

probably restricted by adwords...they might make it too high for others to bid on certain terms. just my guess though, i never asked them! i dont think google would approve any ads with "google" in them.

Another reason is that there just isnt any money to be made from the keywords vs the cost of click

You can't advertise 'ebay' using Google Adwords - it's a registered trademark of eBay and they will sue anyone using that term.

The Adwords terms and conditions will give you some of the answers. There are niches that you cannot use Adwords for and I presume that Google imposes similar conditions on the other advertisers that now use its ad network.
