Is selling the very first product that you've created such a great idea?

Once I finished my first product, an ebook, I was confident that it was going to sell reasonably well online. After all, it was well focused and clearly written AND sold quite a few copies offline.

But I can't help thinking that I might have gotten more mileage from that first product had I just offered it for free in exchange for opt-ins.

If I had to do it over again, I might have. Perhaps I should have. I'm only saying this now because I've reviewed that first product two years later and would have definitely done things differently. To be honest, I don't really like it anymore.

All of that led to my wondering if it might have been better for a newbie like me to have used that first product as bait for opt-ins in the first place.

    Hi,

Interesting story. You'll make yourself crazy second guessing
    and looking back (too much).

    Consider the following...

    1. You successfully sold it offline.

    2. If you offered it as optin material, that's fine, but you'll need to
then sell something to your list. That's feasible of course if you can
build a list, build good relationships, and successfully sell other products
to them. Not all guaranteed, not that I'm suggesting you can't do it.

    Here are some ideas...

    1. Write a shortened version of the old product. Don't give away the
goods, though. Then offer that as an optin ebook.

    2. Revamp your old product into something better. Update it and make
it better. You can do another ebook or make a video product out of it.

    3. Offer that to your list and keep going from there.

Of course it's a good idea to make sure the market for that book is
online in good numbers and spends money. But it sold well offline, and
I would 'tend' to think there's a good possibility with it online.

What do you think? I wouldn't give up on it if it sold well before.

The biggest problem people have is second guessing themselves and
      over analyzing things.

      Don't.

As Eric Louviere says, "Get out there and sell stuff."

Your product is NEVER going to be as perfect as you want it to be. You're
never going to be 100% satisfied with it. You'll drive yourself crazy if you
      try.

Create a product and sell it...period.

So what are you doing currently? Did you stop selling the ebook altogether? I really like Ken's suggestions; what about implementing them?
