Do affiliate links on your site effect your Google ranking?

I noticed a thread about Google reducing your sites ranking if it contains affiliate links.

Can't find the thread now though...

Dose anyone know if this is true?

How do you know it's true?

What can we do to work around this problem?

Thanks

I don't know the exact answer to this but I prefer to do a server side php redirect for affiliate links. It looks better and can be keyword optimized.

i think what ur speaking of spam. one author/isp uploading a lot of writings with affiliate links, no unique content, and using free blogs: squidoo, hub, free wordpress version, blogger.

i have a niche site, paid hosting, paid domain, and i write my OWN stuff
and my site is pumped full of amazon links and widgets

I posted about losing a website that had 27 pages of original content last night. It is an affiliate site that has ranked well for several years and have brought me thousands of dollars throughout the years. 3 weeks ago I lost all of my rankings. It was strange because not only did I have all original content but I also had relevant websites pointing backlinks directly to my site.

Just to let you know, I woke up this morning and the website was back in the top 5. It goes to show that even after having rankings all of these years your site could still do the Google dance.

I just had another site that lost its rankings too that was making me a ton of money. Turns out that my Wordpress site just needed to be updated. It looks like the site was changing settings by itself to default. Weird isn't it?

This is another reason building your list is so important. When you do, you don't have to bank on a 3rd party like google who can screw you over all of a sudden.

We have over 120 affiliate sites most of them ranking in the top 10 for their keywords and since the rumors of this started floating around we haven't noticed any significant changes.

The "Pretty Link" plugin is the easiest way to cover up affiliate links if you're using wordpress. Its free and super easy to use.

Precisely. Search Engine rankings are important, but people put too much value on Google and whatnot. So many big sites get most of their traffic through other ways other than search engines.

And I mean a list is just essential. Seriously. It's like selling something without trying to get at least a bit personal with the customers.
