Question for Ping.fm with Shorten2.ping plugin

I am blundering along, learning to build sites with Wordpress. Sometimes when I don't know something, I just try to use it and either it works or I really screw things up. I'm hoping to avoid screwing things up with my question.

If you use Ping.fm with the plugin Shorten2.ping will it conflict or cause duplicate pings with the built in Update Service in Wordpress. I already have between 50 and 60 places to ping listed under Update Services. Would those be overwritten by Shorten2.ping or what? I could not find info when I read about Shorten2.ping so I was hoping someone here knew how that works? So much of this stuff, especially pinging and bookmarking is Greek to me...sigh.

    From what I understand...

    Shorten2Ping is meant to help you send new posts & status updates through Ping.fm to various social network accounts you have on sites like Twitter, Facebook, FriendFeed, Flickr, etc.

    Whereas the "Update Services" section is meant to notify/ping search types sites to let them know you've added new content they can index.

      Thank you. I told you it was Greek to me. I can't seem to get it straight in my head, but that really helps. So then Ping is a social bookmarking software. You would use it instead of Bookmarking Demon, or Social bot or something like that? Guess I got confused, embarrassing.

        Nope, you'd still have to use other tools to bookmark your pages.

        The "ping" process would send a "message" to sites like google requesting it index the new changes (pages, comments, posts, etc) on your site.

        So you end up with 3 processes.
        1-ping the indexes using "Update Services"
        2-update your social network accounts using ping.fm/shorten2ping
        3-bookmark your site pages using whatever software you choose to use
