How fast do your pages load?

We all know that Google is now assessing load times when ranking pages. Slower pages will, according to Google, rank behind faster loading pages. The logic in this is, of course, apparent and appropriate.

But do YOU know how fast your pages load? You'd better, I'd say.

Well, you can find out how fast they load for Google. If you have Google Webmaster Tools installed on your sites (and to be honest, I advise all of my students and clients to install it), from the Dashboard you can click on the "Labs" menu item and choose "Site performance" to see how fast Google is able to load your pages:

Then you'll get a nice little graph showing you how fast your pages load for the Googlebot and where your pages stand in relation to all other pages in the index. In the case of the last site I checked in WMT, my pages are loading faster than 78% of the rest of the pages on the Web.

If you're not using Google WMT, I highly recommend it. There's a lot of very useful information provided that will help you understand exactly what is going on with your site as it relates to Google. You can even fetch your pages via WMT and see EXACTLY what your pages look like to Google!
