How to monetize on current events?

Saw one post on another forum about how someone capitolized on a current event, think it was when Obama became the Democratic nominee for president. So question is, have any of ya'll capitolized on current/upcoming events? For instance, BP Oil spill, health care overhaul, new Twilight movie coming out haha. Anything like that? I know it wouldn't be sustainable long term as fads and events come and go from the limelight but searching for ideas on this issue.

I tried this in the past with little luck, because current events usually change so often that writing articles or setting up a site for the event is pointless. However, I have had some good luck using revenue sharing bookmarking sites to link to current events news, i.e. shetoldme.com during the bp oil spill - I linked to probably 300 news articles about the oil spill the first day it happened, and continued doing that every time there were developments about the event. I probably made around 20 bucks in adsense for only an hour or so of work.

If you have a site with A LOT of traffic, you can cash in big time with current events - but if you are like me and your traffic is pretty stagnant, it's not a good use of time.

Guess you're right. I will be on the lookout for new products though, especially ones seen in pop culture stuff (those animal bracelets, the Kramer Painting haha, etc.). Good landing page for a current fad item not diminated by the big boys.

Thanks for the insight bro, I'll focus my efforts elsewhere

Rather than fads, there are ways (if you're paying attention), to get a handle on trends and changes on the horizon based on current events.

Unfortunate but true, some of the biggest disasters drive some of the longest reaching changes. If you look at it from that perspective (not taking advantage of people and price gouging), there is a lot of potential there.
