wordpress upgrade issue... error on line 17

Hi Warriors,

I just tried upgrading my wordpress 2.8 to 3.1 by clicking the "upgrade automatically" button in the WP control panel. I do that then get this error message:

Fatal error: Class wp_filesystem_direct: Cannot inherit from undefined class wp_filesystem_base in /hsphere/local/home/lastingp/hcggrantspass.com/wp-admin/includes/class-wp-filesystem-direct.php on line 17


Anyone know why?

    Hey just overwrite your existing wp-admin file. Download it from wordpress and overwrite it, it will keep any additional files and clean up any broken ones.

    To be honest, I never trust those "automatic" gizmos. They always require some special permission to execute tasks on your server and
    - I don't like giving over control of my site; and
    - they need too much confidential info (FTPlogin); and
    - they have varying result on different server environments

    The "manual" upgrade is not that complicated and it doesn't involve heavy lifting.

    Backup (which you should do even in the case of the automatic thing!!!) your site - i.e. the files and the database -; upload the fresh files, run the upgrade script. Done.

    This is why you learn how to do stuff manually - download the upgrade, unzip, upload, run the upgrade script.

    If you do not know how to upgrade your site without clicking the "upgrade automatically" button, you should really take the time to get some hands on experience.
