Ok, this is the question I got a lot in my phone consultation sessions -

For people who are just starting out, what would be the fastest way to build an email list, assuming that they do not know anything about web traffic generation?

    Thank you.

The fastest way is going to depend on the niche, but if you don't know traffic generation the fastest way is to get an ad swap from someone that already has a list. Obviously, you have to proove to them that they are sending their list to someone trustworthy, so you might have to do some free grunt work for a fair trade.

That being said, you will eventually have to learn web traffic generation methods. The fastest are Twitter and Facebook, but they are VERY untargeted and don't convert well.

Lastly, invest in a good viral 'suggest a friend' script (that sends from their email address, not yours!) This will greatly multiply your list growth.

I'd love to know if you produce more than one article per keyword. Personally I feel that it is a waste of time and time would be better spent building backlinks to get that article (for the particular keyword) to rank in big old "googs" and then move onto other keywords.

    But what do you do?

I just think its a waste of time. Here are the reasons why:

      1. I only pick keywords that I know I can rank for, so I don't need a 'shotgun pattern' of articles all on the same keyword.

      2. The idea of multiple listings in the top ten isn't worth it... 40% of search go to number 1. In the time it takes me to rank another article for the same keyword, I could rank an article for a different keyword and get more traffic.

      3. I convert my articles into different media (video, pdf, audio) so I get a lot of different traffic for each keyword anyway.

To sum up: I personally believe (not a fact, just my opinion) that you only need one article per keyword, submitted all over creation.

That's a great and common question. I used to go by competing sites, but I've changed. Let me explain why really quick:

You only care about the top ten competing pages, right? So who cares about the other 10,000? I'd rather compete with 1 million pages that know nothing about SEO than 10 pages that know everything about SEO.
Because of this, I go by how well the competing pages are optimized. If the top ten are all blogs, it also help to know that they'll be easy to beat. I use a free tool called domain samurai to do all of my domain research; it's amazing :-)

        Hi,

        Thanks for this thread.

What is the normal $ rate for a 500 word article please?

And which "Suggest a Friend" script do you use or recommend?

        thanks

I know PHP so I actually coded my own, but the one by Mike Filsaimane (spelling?) is pretty good. The normal rate for an article differs greatly from writer to writer.

Do you use any tools to check the top 10 sites or just do your own investigation?

I like using Market Samurai to investigate, and quit using Domain Samurai once they integrated the features into the MS product.

I only check the top ten for high traffic keywords, most that get less than 50 searches a day are pretty easy to beat. I use Micro Niche Finder and Domain Samurai for keyword research, haven't needed to buy market samurai yet.
