Everybody check your PayPal accounts IMMEDIATELY

My brother just called. He found out this morning that his PayPal account got jacked for $1,500 -- this is the account that is linked to his actual business checking account. PayPal will restore the funds, but it could take up to 9 business days to get it back.

Sorry to hear about your brothers problems.. Hope he does get it taken care of $1,500 is a good bit of money..

This is why you never release your paypal information to anyone and

    Always .... Always .....

Type Paypal in your address bar on your browser, never click on links in email, even if it is from someone you know.. Always go directly to paypal..

Likely he fell victim to phishing.

It's also helpful to always use unique passwords on each site so, in case one account is compromised, the rest aren't as easily.

Well, we're all here to look after each others backs right? Actually, better
not keep joking about it in case a Paypal employee is on his lunch break...

In all seriousness though, that's bad news. It happens a lot I imagine, but
it's good that PP look after their customers and don't mess around with
            getting the funds back.

On of the best tools i found to protect me from the phishing scams ia a little add on for fire fox called petname. This allows you to give secure sites a nick name, which will appear in a box in the top right corner of your browser.

This nick name will only appear for this site if the url is the sames as when you created the nick name for the page. If it does not match then the nick name will not show.

This simple tool can and will save your account info from phisher's if used correctly..

    Learn more about petname here.

The best thing you can do is always go to your address bar on your browser and type in paypal.com - No tools, No Guessing, NoAdd-Ons, No Hassels... Take all but 5 seconds to type in a domain name and hit return.

That 5 seconds could end up saving you a great deal of time and money...

I think your PayPal address was used by a scheming individual to defraud Mr. Allsman of $150. Being an avid World of Warcraft player, I am quite familiar with the sale of online gold for real world cash. Chances are, the said scheming individual promised Mr. Allsman $150 in exchange for the latter's in-game 20,000 gold. Probably, the said scheming individual sent a message to Mr. Allsman stating something like "send me your 20,000 gold and expect payment via PayPal from this address."

      Worse...

thats bull shit no one will ever sell wow gold to your site again i cant belive you pull'd this shit
It seems like the said scheming individual is operating an MMORPG gold selling website, and is using your PayPal address to trick people into selling their MMORPG gold to the service.

In retaliation, Mr. Allsman might've targeted your email address.

Perhaps a correspondence with Mr. Allsman is in order? He might continue to operate under the mistaken impression that you are the person who defrauded him. He may continue to ransack your PayPal address, or he may warn people against transacting with the PayPal address which happens to belong to you and this may affect your own business.

That sounds like either that person genuinely got the wrong person and is trying to claim the money back from them (who is actually you now!) or they are trying to pull a false claim on random people.

If your browser is hijacked, it doesn't matter whether you type it or click a bookmark. Your hosts file can be changed to bring you to a different IP address when you access paypal.com no matter how you got there. You'd see paypal.com in your address bar. But you won't see the green bar and lock from their extended validation SSL certificate.

An old trick to stop this is to set your hosts file to read-only permissions. For Microsoft Windows open Windows Explorer and navigate to,

        C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\etc

Open the hosts file (no file extension) with Notepad to see what's in it, or if you need to edit. When you are done saving your changes, just right click on the file to view properties and click the checkbox for Read-only. That simple trick goes a long way to protecting yourself from unauthorized changes to the file.

The next thing you would have to be aware of is changes to your DNS settings on the home computer, and upstream on your router device, and if you're really paranoid, all the way to your ISP. Some people use OpenDNS for that very purpose, to avoid their ISP and block specific categories of nonsense on the web.

Thanks for the warning. Last time my Paypal account was also hijacked and the hijacker took out $150 from my bank account without my knowledge to purchase something online. Fortunately, I get my money back from the company where he purchases the product.

Btw, just some head up as well. Asking Paypal for assistance is usually gonna be useless since they always keep answering things that you don't ask.

I would never reply to anything that rude and uncouth. I would forward it to paypal for them to review and would request an answer from paypal as to what is going on.

Replying to someone like that isn't wise. As paypal seems to be involved in the mistake it's important to go through them about it.

Hi cloudchaser22, I actually mean if you ask them assistance via emails. Cause every reply that they gave to me came from different agents every time and it always answer the questions that you didn't actually ask. My emails correspondence with Paypal happened almost 10-15 times and it still didn't resolve the issue. At the end, I have to find a way myself to get my money back.

I have to agree with this, they tend to reply your e-mails with a pre-written answer, mostly taken directly from their FAQs or terms and conditions.

This happened to me about 2 months ago. Someone used my Paypal to buy an iphone or something off ebay. About $300. I got it back. This guy does this repeatedly and he keeps buying the same thing over and over.

If you have a problem getting help by e-mail, pick up the phone and call. Every time I do they pick up immediately and the people have always been helpful. I use the business support number I found on their site somewhere.

Here's a tip for those of you who use Roboform...

When you're saving your Paypal password in Roboform for the first time, enter (Paypal.com) in your address bar directly and browse to that site.

Now when you enter your ID and password, Roboform will ask to save it. Save it.

The beauty of this is that if you're at some phishing website instead of the Paypal main site, the Paypal passcard will NOT appear in your Roboform toolbar. It shows up only when you're at the original Paypal site.

And you also don't have to enter paypal.com into your address bar every time you access your account. Roboform will automatically access the authentic site and log into your account.

    Hope this helps.

    Thanks,
    Dean.

Thanks for the warning. When I start getting money coming in I'll have to watch for problems. Don't have any yet, problems that is.

  • This happened to me 5 1/2 years ago. They emptied my checking account which caused my account to become overdrawn.

Nearly 3 years later I received the overdraft charges from paypal thanks to a class action lawsuit.

What about those of us using Roboform?

Would I Still be safer entering the site directly?

What are the risks if I continue to logon using RoboForm?

    Hello markquinn,
I would say RoboForm is a good idea because of the encryption feature to hide your passwords. Below is an excerpt from their FAQ.

Q: How are my Identities and Passcards encrypted?
A: Your Identities and Passcards are encrypted using AES, BlowFish, RC6 or 3DES algorithm and the encryption / decryption key is generated from the Master Password. This encryption method makes your data very secure and even if hackers come into possession of your Identity and Passcard files, they will have to crack one of these encryption algorithm without knowing the key which is considered impossible. By default AES encryption is used.
But you would still want to be diligent about protecting your computer from trojans and keyloggers. The strongest passphrase in history can still be broken by an attacker if he can simply copy your keystrokes.

Thanks for the heads up, I checked mine...sounds like some security issues are at hand.

Hey in The Netherlands, youngsters steal virtual stuff the old fashioned way...

Stealing virtual goods is a crime, according to a ruling handed down by a judge in Leeuwarden, the Netherlands, this week.

The decision came in the case of a 16-year-old boy charged with beating another teenager in the victim's room and stealing virtual property. On Sept. 6 last year the defendant forced the 13-year-old victim to log in to RuneScape and hand over the money and virtual goods he possessed in the virtual world, according to the charges.

I never leave too much funds in paypal. I usually transfer anything over $100 bucks. Sorry to hear about your brother and I hope he takes the steps to make his account safer and delete emails that come disguised as paypal. These people have no conscience.

I probably get 3 or 4 paypal phishing emails a week. I've reported to paypal and the email provider (MSN) multiple times, to no avail. Now I just ignore the emails.

I regularly clear my cookies and temporary internet files as a precautionary measure against any malware or spyware in addition to having Symantec Corporate edition on my PC's.

I also always type the full URL to paypal. I also close my browser and re-open if I catch an email like that.

Setting the hosts file to read only was a nice tip.

Phishing is how the hackers get your information and, of course, if your account is linked to your bank they can withdraw a lot of money.

Someone hacked my back account recently and took all my funds. Apparently they got the details from a card swipe machine that dishes out a paper full of your details. The bank replaced the money after a lot of communication.

It pays to be doubly careful.

I'm sorry for your brother's dilema.

He can avoid this in the future by purchasing the "PayPal Security Key" for $5 from the PayPal site.

You wear it on your keyring and when you log in, besides asking for your regular password, it will prompt you to enter the randomly generated Security Key number.

That way no one will be able to access your account, except you.
