Help a newbie to get started

Hi. I've spent most of the day looking though this site and following some of the links and will continue to do so thoughout the week. But I must admit I'm a little confused on how to start.

I'm not hoping for a get rich quick thing. I'm starting college next month so my income will be pratically zero and I'm looking to try and make enough money to pay the bills say 400-800 pounds a month would be great.

I thuoght setting up a blog writting about something I'm interested in would be a good start. It could also double eventually into a site for the business I want to get into. What would be the best way to get some income from that blog? What options are there and how do I go about doing that? And where to Hubs come into it.

Any advice would be welcome.

I would recommend that you learn the basics of affiliate marketing and start building niche websites that promote relevant Clickbank products. Get traffic from article submissions, which also help your SEO, and from posting on niche forums.

This method is simple, but it does work.

While you're just starting out, choose long-tail keywords with less than 5,000 monthly searches in Google as the titles of your articles. Do the keyword research with google's external keyword tool. Sorry, I cannot post links here.

I also recommend that you check out the free report which you can get if you click on my signature. It's on the right side of my blog and it contains a lot of valuable info on affiliate marketing.

If you havn't already, search for "The Challenge" by Ed Dale. It is a free course currently running until about october. It give complete step by step instructions on how to set up a blog and gain money from it. You will learn a lot from it.

I would agree with Mark P, "The Challenge" is a great place for newcomers to start. There are certain steps you need to take before setting up a blog and this course goes through all that. You will then be taken onto actually setting up the blog and the things you can do to make money from it.
Just take it one step at a time.
    Good luck

A common piece of advise is to read and learn from others however I would encourage anyone starting out to learn by doing rather than reading or listening. The best idea to generate income is similar to what Serafina states. However you could try viral marketing aswell which has zero startup costs.

Since you're already onto giving content in which you're interested in, give it a go but before doing anything else, make sure if your interested niche has its "market" in place so you can generate traffic easier.

As said above, it's true and it's crucial for you to do keyword research. Say for example if you're interested in "Bike Riders" market, you can break it down to its niche and subniches as Dirt Bike Riding and Professional Dirt Bike Trails for instance. You could check on Google Adwords Free Keyword tool to test keywords out and see global monthly searches to compare with the number of search results. For this instance, search through your preferred keywords in quotes. (e.g. "professional dirt bike trails") then evaluate from here:

After generating keywords, write articles (350-500 words) on a regular basis and have it posted on your blog to test your readership. From there, that's how you could start.

    I hope this helps.

Just remember to keep your head up, people make mistakes but learn from them all the time. Keep the motivation and the drive going, and you'll succeed if you put your mind to it. Good Luck!!!

    Hi,

I'm just starting out and I found a brilliant product where a free ebook (you can get this at my link) runs you through all the steps in making a website. It talks you through everything in detail and in no time you'll have a web business up and running if you follow the steps...

there'll always be a start up cost as all business require speculation to accumulate, but the sense of satisfaction of actually starting something new and seeing results is remarkable.

Thank you everyone for your help and advise. Sorry it's taken this long to reply but the last couple of days have been a bit hetic but I have followed up every lead posted here.

The idea I had for a blog doesn't seem to be that much of a niche but I'm still going to go for it as it will give me experience setting up a site for something I'm interested in.

Make a product in a new and expanding market,
    hyped it up,

get a bunch of your friends to give you fake testimonies,

create a killer sale page with video content of you posting in front of a really expensive sports car ( just go test drive one),

get a bunch of guys in this business to back you up ( not hard to do if you give out 75% commission) ,

make some stupid backend/upsell products i.e "proven campaigns" +maybe software than does nothing.

Go to clickbank and upload it.

Make millions, then come back here and buy me a beer.

    j/k lol

If u can write, design, do boring tasks that people hate to do.. You can start with freelancer.com, elance, fivver.com.. this will get you going. and then u can start doing real IM

I still believe that adsense is the best way to make money from a blog when first starting out. It is easy to use and you can see a trickle of cash start and build to a nice income. I would learn about this and how to build website traffic from free methods like article marketing.

Hey, A great thread to answer your question is one John (Zeus66) wrote. Its a two part thread on how to start a blog for free and how to monetize it. Just search for "Blog Empire" on here and you will find it.
Also, I wrote an eBook for newbies that may help, you can get it free here: www.cobywright.com/freedownload.html and I have a free 7 day affiliate marketing course that may help, you can see it at: Affiliate Marketing Profits 7 Day Crash Course

But if you don't do anything else, check out Zeus' thread. I read it and instantly went to work doing the things he suggests. Here is the first blog that I built using his theories and instruction: Parakeet Paradise - How to Care for, Breed, and Train Your Parakeets Zeus makes it very simple to follow and includes videos. The part that is the hardest when first starting out it to actually get started doing it.

PS. I'm in college too and use my online biz to pay for my tuition

If you are positive that you want to get into blogging as your business plan (that is to say, you've done all the research and think that blogging fits your talents best) then the best way to start is first to get some cash together to buy yourself a proper domain and hosting.

There are free options out there for starting a blog but in my opinion, if you are starting something long term (which you should be) it is best to just start off with a self hosted blog (for multiple reasons).

Alright once you've got the domain and hosting, set up your theme and wordpress and then get offline. What you need to do is write up your content creation plan. This means that you figure out what topics you are going to write about and how often you are going to post (this will save you alot of time later on because you will be able to research the next days topic before you start writing it which means you can write much faster and much better quality). After you have your plan, list some possible ways to monetize. This include putting up adsense, finding affiliate products to promote, building a list, selling advertising space...etc. I would suggest to pick one of this to start with until you have a healthy amount of readers (you don't want to bog them down with advertising..remember..they are there to read your content..give it to them easily).

Once you have both plans, set everything up and simply work the plans. This isn't a full business plan but it will get you started and give you a great direction to head in for the future. Then once you know what you want to do with it in the future you can create a full business plan and go from there.

Just remember, plan out everything you do and you will do it to the best of your ability.

    Gregg
