How much to charge for advertising?

Hi guys,

My question is fairly straight forward - how much should I charge a business/company/individual to have a link to their site showing on my site?

As a bit of background to this particular site, it is a niche WP blog in the 'health' market, but nothing to do with weight loss or internal cleansing of any kind, so not too commercial. This is reflected in the number of affiliate products offered, which total less than 10 (from the research I have done). Affiliate sales have dropped recently, and I feel it might be because those visitors to my site have probably seen most of the offers before! The content is still relevant to visitors though, so advertising might be a way to make the site more profitable.

This particular site gets around 2000 uniques per month (all organic traffic), and is growing as rankings increase, and new keyphrases are added. It currently ranks position 1 on Google for 5 keyphrases, and on page 1 for about 15-20 more, depending on how Google feels that day of course . The site is about 18 months old.

Also, this site is focused on the UK due to the .co.uk domain I bought (silly really because it is not a country specific niche).

I have identified about 10 companies/organisations (profit and non-profit) that fit directly with my site. The only stumbling block is what to ask for in return for putting up a banner/link to their site.

I am happy to show them the relevant traffic stats, and even happy to remove advertising for affiliate products (I won't be losing much...). I would also make their links site-wide (appear on all posts - currently about 15 but growing by a couple per month, and on the home page, as well as a 'links' page). Does anyone have a strategy for getting paid for having advertising on your site? I realise 'as much as you can get' is the answer, but I dont want to go in too high and scare potential customers off as there is a limited pool in this particular niche.

Based on the info I have provided, any general thoughts as to a charge per month would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance Warriors.

EDIT: I am not looking for Adsense advice here, more a way of making a fixed income per advertiser per month.

Oh, and hopefully this will help any Warriors who have niche sites with decent traffic but can't make sales through affiliate products due to saturation of the product or some other reason!

I would say at 2000 uniques/month you should start low but offer a few slots and see if you can first get a few advertisers started. Then as demand increases you can charge a premium.

It is okay to contact me! I have been developing software since 1999, creating many popular products like phpLD.

There are scripts you can utilize to set up pay per click bidding just like adwords.
For 2000 uniques per month the cost will be minimal without guaranteed clickthrough rates.
Also the market factors greatly on price.
If you have a site that caters to plastic surgery or some luxury ,high dollar item then the advertisement cost is naturally going to be higher as one client for them is much more valuable than someone buying a single video game.

Thanks for the feedback. Getting away from the CB and CPA payouts, the companies I am looking at approaching sell physical products, the cheapest being about £200 from what I can tell.

I'm still hoping some advertising guy out there in the Warrior mists will offer up a sensible per week charge I should be aiming for, even if, as you point out, I start off at the lower end.

      Thanks
