Good opt-in rate for opt-in forms?

Curious,

a) What do you consider a good opt-in rate for your forms (& if you can share an industry, that helps)
b) If you don't mind sharing what has worked for you to increase the opt-in rate, please do so to.

It's cool -- never used stuff like aweber before (used to do that by hand or with custom scripts), but it is actually rather convenient, including the stats (although I could still calculate that before).

Anyways, with one site I have (health/wellness related niche), while its only been about 5 hours, I've had about 67 impressions and 2 signups, one confirmed (double optin).

I'm giving a free report (recipes & health info), so so far about 3.4% conversion.

Is that "good", or 'crappy' given the fact that the info is free? Obviously I will be playing around with it a bit more (testing different offers, etc), but just looking for some metrics of how to 'guage' how successful my rate/etc is?

It is also the 'lightbox' opt-in form.

Thanks!

Optin rates can usually be 30-50% Even more in some cases.

To increase optin rates, this has worked for me.

    -Use a red headline
    -use arial 12 font
    -dark background, white page
-Include your optin form above the fold
    -strong call of action
-time sensitive offer (This report is only free for another 1 day and 12 hours)

I'd say its too early to tell on your site with such small numbers, but most of my sites are around 75-78% opt-in...although I think that is extremely high. Our visitors are pretty laser targeted and we have a free offer that's been effective so that might contribute to the high number.

Do you have any audio or video on your site? We actually tested for our market and found the video decreased conversions while audio of me saying the exact same thing with just a still photo of myself (poorly shot photo, not a professional one) worked the best. So test out a few things...I'd never guess those would be best for our site but they are what worked for us.

I get about 50-70% optins on most of my squeeze pages.

There are some squeeze pages that are couple of months old and still have over 90% optin rate. However, those squeeze pages are the ones that only my buyers are referred to after they have been on my list for about 2 months so I am not really surprised by the number.

Aside from the usual which I'm assuming you know, things like keeping your form above the fold, big red headlines, etc. I've found for me that "ugly" almost, well like 95% of the time outperforms "pretty" squeeze pages by substantial amounts usually. I usually get anywhere from 15% to 26% optin rates usually, sometimes higher and lower of course depending on whatever variables may be at hand such as traffic sources, testing offer or headlines etc.

My advice based on what has worked for me for a long time, keep it very simple, follow the usual basics.

FYI- note that I usually use paid traffic usually in the form of PPC. Also note that I operate in niche markets.

Hope that helps you out some.

Hey James....I have the same results. We have gotten affiliate conversions as high as 80% (their list relationship affects the number as well).

Average across the boards for most affiliates are around 40% which I consider too low. I like to see conversions at minimum at 50% for our affiliates.

It's surprising that even the Look of the Ugly Red "WARNING" makes a difference.

And....I have actually increased conversions with the optin below the fold and below the Call To Action text. - No Sidebar. 1 Picture of the Developer and like 3 - 4 Subtitles....always good for a minimum 50%
(until the market gets sick of it...and begins to reject it.)

Just my 2 cents...there are many ways to cut the grass

  • Thanks for the feedback so far.

Would any of you guys have suggestions of what 'types' of reports you are offering, (or whether it is 'sign up to my newsletter', or something else?)

    Thanks!
