Why the heck is Kern using Javascript in his Emails ??!?!?!?!

Hey All,

Why would you use javascript in a email for links. I just found some in Franks latest email and I don't know what they are for.

It keeps crashing my Internet Explorer

Frank - I'd love to offer advice on why your links are javascript but I havn't got a clue... Maybe it's an error with your autoresponder.

Anyone any ideas ???

    Holy crap?....

Why on this green earth do you feel the need to pollute the forum with what shoudl be a private mail to Frank?...

Care to read the forum rules chief?... especially Rule Number 1..

Sorry to be so harsh but it's ludicrous you would do this here

Excuse me Jay, but this doesn't break any rules. I do not have a problem with Frank, I have never seen javascript in email before - I simply wanted to find out what Javascript is for and did Frank know about it? . Do you know what it is for?

      I shall Edit the post.

Please do not quote rules again that do not apply.

Geesh..calm down a sec...I think he is just asking why someone would put javascript in an email. (I can think of a couple diabolical scenarios).....

Frank mentioned the importance to "track" email.
He said html is necessary but, didn't discuss java

His emails have always used referrer urls, he did mention changing autoresponder, but is still using elabs. Regardless, I think his autoreponder service have messed up as the javascript kills my browser.

No idea what it should do - don't think it nefarious - but if Frank has an advantage I want in!!

It's all part of my evil scheme to take over the internet. (Or I screwed something up in the email).

Umm ...damn. I screwed something up in the email. Maybe a bug in Email Labs ...but more likely good ol' operator error!

So funny that Frank just mentioned that...

I was just reading a book by Jason DatGhuru that there is a weird phenomenon where if you send out 3 emails with Javascript encoded links you'll get a check in your mailbox from some fortune 500 companies in celebration of the Beijing Olympics.

He says it's kind of like the Beetlejuice, Beetlejuice, Beetlejuice thing...

Wait... oh crap... I said it three times - Someone call 911

I think this begs the more important question of:

    WTF are you using IE?

No Bearded it is not an important point at all.

IE might not be your idea of heaven but the majority of my customers and clients use it. Firefox is my favourite. Safari is nice but not exactly mass market yet. I am shocked that you can't see why I use IE as well.

Please, people with pointless mac vs pc comments, or browser comments - think first before you post. Do you have any idea how your site looks on IE - and how a lot of your visitors will see it?

        Cripes. Get all defensive.

And yes, I know how my sites look in ie, because I use Browser Shots.

You can see how your sites look in just about any browser on any OS with any version of flash.

My main point was just that you can't get MAD when IE crashes. That's what it does best.

            Hey Bearded!

Sorry for being defensive - totally my bad. I had some guy kicking off at me earlier for no reason and it made me a bit tetchy - no excuse though!!!

            So big apologies are due!

Anyway, thankyou for that bigshot link, I can finally leave IE behind!

            Yipee!

            Thanks

            Again.

Hey, no worries, man. I hope that anyone who sees it can leave IE behind, too. I haven't had to use a PC at all for months, and it's been great.

I haven't really checked, but javascript can be used to optimize graphics, add quick response, randomize, personalize, or add data(like a timestamp) to a query. It can also collect some information about your visit. It COULD be used for tracking, but a simple hyperlink refreshed from your email could do that. Then again, there ARE problems with that, which include the inability to read mail offline or that is too old.

Yep, Seasoned is right. How do you think he got 9257 posts on the Warrior Forum. It had to be javascript that he used to add quick response and personalize. Otherwise we would think he was once seriously addicted to posting to this forum

      P.S.
Hi Steve, hope you are doing well long time no talk.

Well, I WAS addicted! NOW, I am somewhat passively interested. I SAID kay might beat me!!!!! 8-( I was off a few days because my server ran out of space once and the quotas on my main user got messed up. Well, the email address HERE pointed there, and I couldn't get my password to the new forum. 8-( I FINALLY got the time to fix that, and I got the password. Of course, there ARE more productive things that I could have done.

In the mean time, KAY beat me. 8-(

Oh well, MAYBE I'll catch up! 8-) I mean she has to take a vacation SOME TIME, right!?!?

        Oh yeah, I'm doing fine.

        Steve
