Default Is there a membership script that allows easy set-up for newbies?

I just had 2 membership scripts installed, only to discover that they both lack an important component, a download directory.

I've been at this all day, trying to find a way to edit headers, footers, etc, etc, etc,........ only to discover that it's been all for nothing. I've made no headway at all. I had expected that it could take me a day or 2 or 3 to get everything set up but not this.

I'm utterly clueless here. Both scripts were considered easy to install and set-up.
The set-up manuals didn't make any sense to me so I paid a nice fellow to do the installs.

Oh Wordpress, how I love thee!

My question is this, is there an actual membership script that does what the owner says it does, easy installation, even for technical dummies like me?

amember.com is probably your best choice. Price is $150 per site.

I've never tried it, but I've heard people on here mention www.locked-area.com - it's apparently free.

Good luck.

Locked-arena, is it new?

Amember isn't for technical dummies like me. A true plug and play system that won't break the bank is what I'm looking for.

Sorry, Mick. Can't tell you much about locked-area. I did scrounge around their site but don't know much about it. I've used aMember and it's relatively easy (depending on what your perspective is). Takes a 1-2 days to get it running if you're starting from scratch. But plug-and-play it is not. I can't imagine that many would be since everyone will want different options. You might want to contract someone to set something up for you. Probably cheaper in the long runl.

I have used Amember and I'd rate it pretty complicated for a newbie.

I am currently using

Membership Manager Supreme

(NOT affiliate link)

I have been VERY happy with it.

I will say that it may still take time for you to set it up... for me, figuring out HOW I wanted the site organization to be took more time than setting up the software.

NOT affiliate link

You can check out DLGuard: DLGuard - Download page protector, create expiring download links

I'm the owner/developer, so if you have any questions about it, I'm more than happy to help!

The downside of Locked Area Lite is that it doesn't intergrate with your payment systems, so anyone can signup for free, bypassing your payment links.

MMS is one of my current problems.

The support is good in their forum but I'm at work when most folks are online

Yes,
from what ive heard in the forum, dlguard is the choice that most marketers go for. moreover, ive also heard that samstephens (the owner) is great at support queries. i think you should go with them.

Sam,

I've been considering DL Guard. Is it user friendly, more so than MMS and SMP?
I had purchased these 2 membership scripts some time ago but just recently had them installed.

Hey there, Sam. I've been thinking heavily about aMember. I did spend nearly a week evaluating their test version. Main problem was support. Having a direct link to the developer is a big plus for me. I'll definately check your site out and give it some consideration.

Hi Mickey,

I haven't used MMS or SMP before, so I can't give you a personal opinion there.

What I CAN say is that I have a LOT of beginners using DLGuard - even beginners who don't really understand the basics of uploading and download files to and from their website.

So yes, DLGuard can definately be used by beginners (as well as experienced developers).

If you need a hand with anything, I'm also happy to help!

With DLGuard, basically all you need to do is create your own membership pages like you do a normal webpage, and then paste some code that DLGuard gives you at the very top of the page.

That's it - when anyone tries to access that page, they're presented autoatmically with a login screen, before being allowed access.

cheers

Hi Russ,

Thanks for your interest!

I actually have a lot of people coming over from Amember - I've been told DLGuard is a LOT easier to use.

And I also try my best to make every customer feel important (which you are) by offering the best customer service I can.

I'm surprised nobody has said anything about Membership Script - EasyMemberPro Feature Packed PHP Membership Software

It doesn't necessarily have a 'download directory'....but it's extremely easy to use....and especially so for newbies. However, it lacks a lot of features that you might need later as your site grows. Kind of depends on what you plan on doing.

Probably one of the simplest solutions is to use Membership software - aMember Pro to manage your subscriptions, and protect your content...and then use WordPress to store, and manage all your content, as well as the theme of your site.

David over at Membership Academy: Membership site software comparisons, reviews, forums and videos, start-up guide. is one who keeps up to date with this kind of stuff....so you might want to contact him. He's very helpful.

Hi Mickey,

You might want to look at a script called John's Little Script For Running A Membership Site - does exactly what it says for a very low price and integrates with the top three online retailers to collect payments from your members.

It has an easy 1 page admin panel - takes just minutes to setup and is solid - pm me for a link and I will install it for free for you and give you support.

Mickey- Here is my personal experience from an unbiased standpoint.

If you are wanting to simply protect your downloads, go with Sam and his DLG. It is very easy to setup and Sam really does respond to issues quickly. I haven't explored the membership capabilities of the software but I need to.

If you are looking for true membership capabilities with your site then I would go with amember. I have set this script up twice now. The first time it was tough for sure as I really don't have the technical experience for that sort of thing. I also found out that the support response from them was usually a day or two and that is a real drawback. So I was able to eventually get it setup without their support. So somebody without any script experience can do it.

With all of that being said, I am currently looking for a membership script that doesn't require another $150 (or whatever it was) every time I want to set it up.

Cons to DLG: None that I know of.
Cons to amember: Slower support and the re-licensing fees required for new sites.

They both work exceptionally well for what they are supposed to do.

We use DLGuard for 2 memberships, as Sam says it's really easy to set up and use. We use our own site design and just paste the membership code into the member pages. If you have DLGuard installed on the same site as the members area, you can also hide the location of the actual download folder.

Hi Michael,

I am so new I'm not exactly sure what you are trying to do, set up a page for somekind of membership thingie ? I just joined a new membership page set up a couple of days ago. I found it here. Go to thread "What do you think about my idea" by Laura. She started a membership page called "newbieexchange" using a thingie called "Ning".

Hope this helps !

You know Warrior Quentin Brown has a series of videos that show you how to use Wordpress to create a paid membership site.

Since you're familiar with Wordpress that may be more suitable for you.

There's also a new membership script out for Wordpress - have only played with it a little but so far I am very impressed - for one thing it also delivers sequential content, multiple membership levels and restricted access by levels.

Great info,

I have invested in many different membership scripts, including a custom version I had created for my own use.

Sam does a fantastic job at DL Guard, as far as support and continuing development he puts a lot of personal time into his work.

MMS is also another one that continues to develop and improve his script.

A lot depends on what you really want to do, the most important part of a membership script is access control, followed by delivery of content and or digital downloads.

I found that some scripts are easier than others to setup and use.

Others can be difficult to comprehend and use because of the way the script is programmed.

From what I have seen there are basically two different types, (loose generalization,)

The first is where the content is created and you add a login code to protect the content which you create.

The second is where the content and the login system are integrated, in other words, you create content automatically from an interface that is integrated into the software.

There are certainly different variations on this theme however, most membership scripts will fall into these categories.

It depends on your individual needs as to which one will fit your needs best.

One quick caveat,

Scripts, will almost always behave differently on different servers.

That is to say that you may have to work on a script, to get it to behave the way you want it to behave.

If you lack trouble shooting skills you can usually find someone with the knowledge to help you out for less than you would think.

Just a few thoughts.

Have a good one.

Tim

I use MembershipEase aka Instant Membership Site Creator. Complete one simple form and your site is created. Couldn't be easier. It costs $27 from the main site at Instant Membership Site Creator | Membership Ease Software but as it is sold with resale rights you can probably get it cheaper if you look around.

I know that Memberzilla is supposed to be released this side of 2008.

I am gooing to be using Membership Manager Supreme for the now, I appreciate that some are having some problems, however Jim Hubbard is working tirelessly to improve script and I can not fault the support provided.

I just wanted to say thanks to those who mentioned Simple Member Pro. While it may not be as easy to set up as some of the lower cost solutions, SMP gives you options and benefits that the other solutions just can't match.

Add to that my personal support, where I go out of my way to help you get up and running if you have any problems. I've been online with customers as late as 4am in the morning making sure their sites are up and running.

Mickey, if you have any problems with SMP all you have to do is contact me any of the several ways I provide and I'll give you personal attention until your issues are resolved.

Heh, yeah it's simplicity can often be decieving.

Some people mistake it for a solution when you just want a basic membership area.

DLGuard is great for basic membership solutions.

BUT, it's also great for developers - one of (or the only?) the best, from what I've seen. Why?

Because of it's flexibility.

DLGuard allows you to create your own pages, and makes customer information availible to you or your programmer.

This means you have the ultimate flexibility with your members area, and can basically do whatever you want inside it.

For example, I'm currently creating a link security service for a client. This is an online service where people login to the site, and secure/cloak their affiliate links.

The whole payment system, login and security, and customer management system is all powered by a DLGuard membership area.

DLGuard's not just about simplicity, it's also about offering the power to those that need it, while keeping it simple for those who don't.

(You can probably see I'm quite passionate about my product )

cheers
Sam

It doesn't necessarily have a 'download directory'....but it's extremely easy to use....and especially so for newbies. However, it lacks a lot of features that you might need later as your site grows. Kind of depends on what you plan on doing.
I have said in my first post on the thread here About easymemberpro!

I use Butterfly Marketing Script and it is extremely easy to setup and stuff and it's full of features but right now it is extremely expensive (about $2000) so I don't think you are looking forward to that.
