Your Blog and Your main site - keep them separate or not??

Hi Warriors...
Just wondering if it's best to set up a separate Blog domain or keep it on your main site as a /blog.

I've noticed that the 4 hour work week author has his main site (fourhourworkweek.etc) and his blog attached to this site fourhourworkweek.etc/blog

Some people say you should set up a separate domain for your blog ie in his case it would be timferris.etc

Any thoughts guys on the best way to set up your blog?

See if this makes more sense:

Just to clarify my initial post/question... my concerns about putting the blog on the main site is:

1). The main site wil be not too far off from being a laser targeted niche site with two products - it will be a word press site with articles continually being uploaded to it (over time) ranging 6-8 main keyword/phrases

2). My blog will be covering a much larger range of topics than the main site...

SO... by putting the blog site on the same domain as the main site will the blog site's larger variety of keywords affect the SEO of the main site which has a smaller number of keywords.

Or... will it be a positive??

Does that make sense???

:-) B

I've always seen my blog (which is part of the main site), as a super-duper content haven, as it serves to keep the site content fresh and exciting. Since Google likes sites that have new content all the time, I consider this a benefit.

You could definately argue it the other way round as well, but I guess it all depends on what works best for you. Hope that helps (and doesn't just confuse the issue further )

Christopher - it does make sense, but is this what the original poster was talking about? I thought he was talking about totally different domain names?

In the 4 hour work week example he gives, he mentions separating the blog into a domain name called timferris.com, which would be totally different from fourhourworkweek.com

Daniel Molano is using the same domain name for his site and his blog, albeit with a static home page...

Part of my problem is I don't know how to conceptualize this stuff yet...

I was under the impression that your domain is an asset in itself, and worth investing in, because a website with richer content will have a higher page rank...so why would you ever want to not increase the size of that asset?? Sort of like, making capital improvements on your house will increase its value, no? (I'm new and not very conversant on the IM topic yet, so feel free to correct me if necessary.)

      Christopher,
I hope your headache goes away soon!

You're right, I just have the one product and am basically just dabbling at this point. If I were to do a blog, I would definitely attach it to the main website. So I get that logic.

But I'm curious--actually, on tenterhooks, since you cut your post short and I got the impression that this is where you were going--in what case would it actually make sense to keep website and blog separate? Why would this be desirable? I can only imagine it would be good to do if their content was unrelated, but even that would be from the standpoint of appealing to the logic of the consumer, which is no small consideration I suppose, but still, if you were only interested in increasing the rank of your site, it might behoove you to keep them together anyway?

I'm really tired--hope that question makes sense...

Here is an example of a wordpress site with a static home page. He ranks on the first page for business consulting so you know his SEO is tight and having a static index isn't hurting.

I hope some of that made sense in one way or another.
      Hi Christopher,

Good posting sir! I have been grappling with this same issue and soon to launch a blogging/commenting extension to my site to (1) continually develop through user-generated-content, (2) build into an authority site, and (3) give me flexibility to enhance site through articles/blog pages that are easy to add. Using Dreamweaver rather than Wordpress/CMS and starting with static pages seems Ok to me, more so since your valuable post. Update: Decided on CMS after all! Better use of my time. After longish research, went with the powerful and SEO/xhtml/css friendly MODx Revolution package.

I have 'business consulting' as one of my keywords but got a looonnngggg way to go to catch up with Daniel Molano with hius near 20,000 backlinks! Wow. That's how he does it, and using his own name too. Got me thinking I should do same and give up trying to find a suitable 'consulting' name. Will study Daniel's site for tips.

Your post made a LOT of sense. Thanks again.

Ref Beau's message just above (while I was typing this) I see my combined standard website with blog to be more powerful than either on its own. Keywords for main site will not usually be needed/duplicated for the many blog articles that will grow from main site. Searching will find the right page wherever it is. Clearly a BIG positive to me.

I like to use wordpress as a CMS and then incorporate the blog into that. It has always worked well and gives the main site a lot more juice with the serps.

We also do thus for all our customers which also works well.

Wow! after reading all the answers above I not feel that I did stupid mistake and kept site and blog seperate. Please suggest me. I have 3 sites. harprit-singh.com and milliondollarresidualplan.com and harpritsinghblog.com. So according to you to what site shall I attached the blog to. I promote the milliondollarresidualplan.com most of the times. I have never promoted harprit-singh.com, its just for reference purposes. milliondollarresidualplan.com is made of single page html whereas harprit-singh.com and harpritsinghblog.com are made of wordpress. So does google like wordpress or simple html page. Please advice? What according to you is a good idea? Thanks

      Hey Hapishguy

milliondollarresidualplan.com is a static page so it would be easy to attach a blog to it and depending on your circumstances I would recommend that as a good way of interacting with customers. You say you only use harprit-singh.com for reference so forget that for now. You could use harpritsinghblog.com as a second blog where you actually show people who you are and makes it more friendly than just the static page at milliondollarresidualplan.com

I hope I haven't butchered that. From what I can see you haven't done anything wrong but you could create a blog for the static page and use the "yourname" blog to depersonalise it and promote it more, link them all up etc etc.

In this case, separate the blog to a unique domain name, and then feed links to your other domains from it. Build up authority on it separately.

It can be positive either way, but if you are creating a brand of "YOU" with your blog site, and targeting "Niche Product" with your sales site, then they should be separate. The larger range of topics gives me the feeling you are stepping outside your niche with the blog, and working to build a wider footprint.

But.....You forgot the ideal situation. A "YOU" blog on another domain, free to talk about all your niches, to discuss any topic you wish, and develop links to your other sites, PLUS a blog on each niche site which is used to hold articles, reviews, and content for your niche product. It should not be an either/or it should be a BOTH.

Personally, I think this should be determined based on your goals...

If you are looking for links and SEO from your blog, then you should do it on a different domain, although you can often create the same results with a blog on a sub-domain of your primary domain...

If you are looking for the branding opportunity and the opportunity to convert more visitors to buyers directly, then you should keep the blog on your own domain...

Having said that, putting the blog on a sub-domain should be able to answer both goals at the same time...
