Am I allowed to reprint the image of a well-known person who's image is available on the web?

Specifically, I want to attach the picture of a doctor to a quote of his already published on the web. This sort of thing is done with celebs all the time.

A very grey area I'm afraid. I did something similar but was asked to remove the image by the person concerned, which I duly did. These days, I won't publish anything unless I am absolutely sure about copyright.

The copyright of the image belongs to whoever took the picture not the person in the picture, however you cannot use a persons photo for commercial purposes except you sign a model release granting you the rights to use it for such purposes, If the image was taken in a public place and you have the permission of whoever took the picture you should be able to use it for non-commercial informative or educational purposes.

Thanks, all. This answers my question... but if the image is disallowed, shouldn't the quote be also? This is a quote from the Mayo Clinic website that's been reprinted in numerous places.

It depends on who snapped the picture...

If the person you wish to highlight has a photo available on his website that he authorized to be used on pages about him, then that would be fine... If he does not have one obviously available, send him a note, and he will more than likely share one with you...

If the doctor did not pay to have the picture produced, then the doctor may not hold the copyright on the image and would therefore fall under copyright law...

Make darn sure that whatever photo you use is available for your use...

Quotes are normally classified as small excerpts of a larger work and therefore acceptable.

The best choice is to just contact this persons office, request a picture to use, the quote you are using, and the context it will be used in. (Unless of course you are using his quote and picture in a way he would disapprove of.)

Most public figures have PR photos they happily allow people to use if you ask. They may request a link back to their site or profile for using it.

You could contact the clinic and ask for permission to reproduce the quote and the photo.
