Adobe Sent Me a Free License to Their $600 Flash Builder 4

Yay! I'm happy. Adobe sent me a free license for their Adobe Flash Builder 4.

I think they are heavily promoting it to developers to increase adoption. I applied yesterday for a free license and got it today. It was fast, I'm impressed.

In case you are wondering what's it for. Well you can build complete and interactive websites using the tool.

It features rich interactive applications which can provide rich user interface, back-end connections and more.

It can be used to create membership sites, single page mini-sites and even local applications. Some internet marketing tools are built with it.

I'm so happy with this tool. I can use it to create some small utilities that can help me with my present job.

Thanks ~

Just my 2 cents with so many people using script blockers like the firefox plugin NO Script is it a good idea to build a flash based site , and also flash is to SEO like kryptonite is to superman.

Having spent some months last year working on a fairly big web-based application with FlexBuilder (FlashBuilder's forerunner), I wouldn't do so again.

    Why?

Well, there's very little support for HTML in Flash so web developers quickly find that all the "stuff" they're used to using simply doesn't exist and has to be crafted manually. That's cool if you've got the time but I'd rather spend my time on functionality, not fighting with the development platform.

It actually has its own way of doing things like input validation. It's fine if you want to use it but it does give the user a different experience. It's when you start trying to "tweak" all this stuff to make it more "normal" for the user that takes more time than you may want to spend on it.

So for me, that actually killed the project and I moved it to PHP with CodeIgniter, MySQL, jQuery and Ajax with some Flash elements which is a killer combination.

Yes, I would use FlashBuilder in the future, but only for cross-platform desktop applications built for Adobe Air or elements that I would incorporate into a web-based application built using more traditional methods. I wouldn't use it for designing entire web-based applications.

Just my take. Hope it's useful.

    Cheers,

...and of course, there's no support for Flash on the iPhone/iPad which may be a problem for some.
