Reliable Update Services for WordPress?

Hi folks - a little new to Blogs (been working static and CMS sites in the past); I am at present configuring a new WordPress blog but, I am stuck on finding a reliable list to add the Update Services field in the admin area.

I know this a real newbie question but, is there a reliable list of Update Services that can be added to the list? I have come across a few, but when I check them to see if they are alive and kicking, a lot of them seem to be down?

Is there a hard and fast list that I can add?

Also is there any plugins that can help, or sites that can supply reliable checked updates?
