Where is money best spent on marketing a product?

Since all products are different, and the actual campaign can determine a lot of the success/failure, this is a fairly general question. I'm currently just about ready to launch my website for movie memorabilia that I sell, and I was wondering where I should be spending money on marketing. I have an email list of about 4,000 names, so of course that will be the first step, but after that I haven't really figured out a plan for marketing.

Assuming I'm dealing with a fairly small budget for marketing at first, where would you guys think the money would be most effectively spent? AdWords? Buying banners on related sites? Some ideas of what has worked in the past for people would be great. I know a lot of you aren't marketing a real tactile product, but I think the experiences would still be valid.

Another question is what email-marketing companies do you guys use? I know constant contact is a big one, but is there any other ones out there that are decent? I'm doing all the design and whatnot myself, so I really just need a place to shoot out the mass email.

I have tried most of the major email marketing programs and in my opinion Aweber is by far the best of the bunch.

As for marketing your website, I would think that because it is quite a niche site there must be a lot of long tail, not that competitive keywords for memorabilia related keywords for each particular movie.

What I would do if I was you is do some keyword research for each of the movies that you sell memorabilia for and find which ones have the most searches for memorabilia keywords and have some pages written up for your site on each of these. You should be able to get some easy, highly targeted rankings which will give you some good, free traffic.

    Good luck!

    benrpalmer-
I have a long tail that I'm targeting, and if I can get it on the first page of google I shouldn't have a problem making plenty of money on the site. The problem with the idea you suggested is that I don't generally stock a bunch of anything. I deal in all of the current stuff, selling actual original prints from the studio. Your plan would work great if I was selling re-prints, since I could just target keywords related to the big cult classic movies everyone is searching fairly consistently. I think it would be much harder to make it work for my niche. Although, maybe if there was some way I could rank on googles first page for specific upcoming movies or something that I think will be huge. The biggest problem with that strategy is the small time frame available to market for any single movie.

It depends on the product you are promoting. As I'm sure you know different product promote better through different media. One offer my convert better with PPV than it does with Seo traffic.

What did you do to build your list? I would continue to do what your doing with list building but more of it.

You might want to test out Facebook ads with your niche... Generally, hard goods dont do well on there, but movie memorabilia might be different - especially if its cool stuff... And you can target people who have indicated that they like the very movies you have memorabilia for - i.e. Pulp Fiction ads for people who liked Pulp Fiction, etc... Thats where I would start.
