AAAAAhhhhh! - Windows update wiped out my files

I went grocery shopping and when I got back, it said the computer had completed a Windows update. When I got started on the computer, I saw that it had wiped out all my files. It looks like it did brand new.

It went into a loop and updated three times in a row while I was trying to figure it out. It had ignored the setting that I was to ok updates.

I have backup, except for some things for the last three weeks.

Any help retrieving my files would be appreciated. Otherwise, I will paste in what I have in backup. I have windows 7 with the xp thingamajig.

Windows updates do not delete your files. If your files were removed, you have some kind of other issue that needs to be addressed.

He's right. Windows update does not delete files. It has in the past caused issues with machines, but doesn't erase data.

Most likely your machine was infected and the virus wiped data or it was hacked and wiped.

Sorry for your situation - it stinks. Glad you have a backup though.

You might want to try an un-delete program. Go do download.com - its part of the cnet network of sites - and look for a free file recovery program. I found one the other day on download.com that was able to recover files off of a scandisk memory card for my camera.

While your at download.com, go ahead and get yourself the free avast anti-virus program. And get mal-ware bytes, its a free malware removal tool.

This is what I was going to recommend as well.

But if you can, do it on another computer and don't save anything new on the one you're trying to recover files on. If the files were deleted somehow, they might be recoverable with one of these programs, but every time you save something new on the computer there's a chance that it will overwrite the spot on the hard drive where the old files' data is sitting.

Ideally, try not to do anything with the computer you need to recover files on, since even just using Windows will write information to the drive, which could overwrite what you need to recover.

Jeannie, before you do anything else, you need to confirm if this was a legitimate Microsoft update or a virus. If your machine is not allowing you to access your restore points, it may very well be a virus.

I reccommend swearing at your computer and smashing it w/ a sledgehammer. That should straighten things out for ya.

Same thing happened to my laptop a few weeks ago. Totally sucks.

      Hi Jeannie,

Here's a number of my computer guy, Kevin Chambers, a local minister who also moonlights, going to homes in the area to fix computers. He does help via phone, too, and is super cheap:

"$29 per hour labor- PC Repair at your home." (that's from his most recent ads online.)

Tell him I sent you, and good luck! If he cannot help, he may know who can or what to do next.

Thanks everyone for your suggestions. My brother came over to help and we are starting an undelete program to see what can be done.

A microsoft malicious software check found nothing, by the way.

      Jeannie -

This will sound nuts - but is your date/time correct?

I had a memory problem (well, my computer did) not long ago and it looked like everything was gone....but the computer had reset itself to an earlier date. Changing the date made everything work again.

Why are there no earlier restore points? That's odd all by itself.

        Kay,

The exact same thing happened to me. I don't know why I didn't think of this when I first read the OP.

Technically it is Windows xp mode and virtual pc that can be used along with Windows 7.

Sorry, but Windows does not delete files you are using just because an update ran. You might have tried this already but have you run a search on your entire hard drive? Maybe you moved a folder accidentally or something.

By the way, what is "windows 7 with the xp thingamajig". You should have either Windows 7 or Vista or XP.
