Is Affiliate Marketing A Roller Coaster Ride?

Hey guys so I had something interesting happen to me the past few months and maybe someone can help me out that has had an experience with this. I created an affiliate website for a health related product 2 months ago. It was my first real affiliate website so I didn't think it would really make any money. About a month and a half in I noticed a sale of $41 come through. That gave me a little motivation to concentrate on the site and start creating more mutliple niche sites based on product name keywords. All of the sudden more sales started rolling in after I tweaked a few things on the site. Come to find out, the little seo I did the month before payed off and I was now number 2 in google for that keyword. From july 19 till today (1 month) I have generated $328 from that website. The only problem is is I haven't had a sale for 7 days and now I'm number 1 in google lol. I thought this was pretty odd. I was wondering if anyone else has had this experience with affiliate marketing? i basically went from $40 - $80 days to nothing at all the past 7 days.

I'm just starting too, and while my goal is product-creation, I'd like to experiment with affiliate marketing too. SEO is key in this field I think, but there's also the mobile marketing which seems to be booming right now, and I started experimenting with it (no returns so far).

I think it's more an art, and trial-and-error. No book or product can teach the experience needed for affiliate marketing, so, I'm leaving that for the experts to answer your question, I'm also very interested to know more about it

Im addicted to IM (studied it for 3 yrs here and there then finally got serious) It kind of just kills my motivation to see this happen and much of my income is depending on it right now. I'm just hoping things will turn around. I have over 1000 unique visitors for the month to this site and 8 sales. I almost have a 20% click through rate

      Hi Jelder,

Yeah, I just started the addiction process.

I've always been a developer, and while I love creating stuff for the web, I definitely lacked the skills that mattered to actually potentialize these skills financially.

Then suddenly I started looking at IM from a different perspective, and things started to click. It's just business and sales (which never attracted me, interestingly enough, and look, here I am!), but much more fun, diverse and inter-disciplinar -- as everything on the web .

Thanks for replying and hope someone else with more experience is able to actually shed some light and answer your questions.

I've had a similar situation jelder...last month i made a sale everyday for a week straight. then a drought of two weeks..maybe with one or two sales sprinkled in. but my traffic has increased...strange results (or lack there of) if you ask me. affiliate marketing is a roller coaster but i also belief that there IS a tipping point and once you reach that (find out how to get there) it'll be smooth sailing... just thought id share my story just to let you know that you arent the only one on this roller coaster!

It is a rollercoaster! You're going to find that the best way to have more consistency is to be well diversified.

Think about what other niche sites you can go into. It's only a matter of investing the time to build other sites.
It sounds silly but what worked for me was that every time I had a huge down day, I would dedicate 2-3 hours of my day toward building a new site. So by staying busy with new projects, you'll eventually reap the rewards of consistent commissions from your growing portfolio of sites.

    Try it and see!

    Good Luck!

What coaster would you compare IM to? Millennium Force? Kingda Ka? Incredible Hulk?

I hope you have a list on your website to continue to communicate with those that may not buy from you the first time

Are you promoting Clickbank products? If so, this may be the reason.

There has been speculation that CB has some tracking issues or worse case scenario even shaving issues. Now of course there is no absolute proof of this, but you should read some of the older threads here regarding this issue. I've experienced this with CB as well and it does seem to go beyond the normal ebb and flow sales cycles.

Just like anything else when it comes to business it is a roller coaster ride....that is why you need many products that are making you cash....that way when one is down the others might be up or at least will cover it.

to be honest i believe it is about focusing on one thing and sticking to it. Don't worry about what everyone else is doing or the latest product. I should be thankful that I finally got a taste of success. I have about 10 different affiliate sites I am working on since and hopefully I can create some success with those sites as well. I'll keep creating these sites until i can fully quit my day job! If i can get 100 of these sites making at least 40 bucks a month that will be success

I've said it before and I'll say it again. The key to affiliate marketing is to scale it up. Find a product that works, optimise your landing page to get a higher conversion rate, and scale up the marketing efforts.
