Does having infomercial type websites promoting products work?

Being in personal development, I have stumbled across so many sites that sell their products using the most tasteless graphics, the cheesiest quotes, all just major fluff. A few years ago I would have cast it all aside as just being stupid, but now as I've matured some more I wonder...

...does it really work? Is it a result of all the marketing knowledge they have. Is it really just something I'm MISSING? Is it really that hard to get attention in the social media / online marketing / personal development world that people have to use extreme tactics?

Or is it a mark of knowledge???

Care to share the sites? What is tasteless to you, may sell to the masses.
