Building a following.

How do you do it in general?

More specifically this is about my music.

But in general how do go about building a loyal following that takes you serious enough to pay for your product?

I can't even get followers on twitter lol.

    Hi THisIzFifty

First thing I want to say is well done for thinking about doing your music as your main project. I love to see people following their dreams.

Now to give you some help ...

Your Handle there 'THisIzFifty' is fine for some things but not for others. If it is your Twitter handle for example, then it will definitely be having a bearing on why you don't get followers.

Now, don't get me wrong here. People use pseudonyms all over the web, as you will know, but if you want to brand yourself, you have to start using your name - your real name (or band name) - in all the your accounts you expect you use as part of your campaign.

By the way, I had not discounted the fact that 'THisIzFifty' could be your band name. If it is, then change it.

Second, you have to give before you can receive. So find a way of giving that also exposes people to what you have for sale. Or simply give away your music.

That sounds counter-productive doesn't it. But you can make a name and a reputation for being the guy who does that. And if you set your download pages up carefully using Adsense or some other monetisation strategy, all you would need to do is keep giving stuff away.

Before someone tells you this won't work, I'll just say up front that you would need to build a big site, but I have done it myself and yes, it works.

Finally, find out where your target market hangs out and be right there in the discussion with your sig pointing to your great free giveaway.

When I say be where they hang out, I mean eberywhere: Facebook (make a fan page), Web (make a website), Twitter (Tweet regularly, but make them unique in some way), Forums (relevant Forums), etc - be all over the place - everywhere they hang out online.

And good luck with your project.

    Will
