Tips To Creating Effective Solo Ads

Using Ezines to run your solo ads will be effective if you follow the steps I set out below. Yes, there is a right way to market your service or product in an ezine, which is an online magazine subscription.

In my personal experience, ezines are more successful with pulling in results than safelists are because you are using a publisher’s list whereas the subscribers are more closely connected and are more likely to use a “contact email” rather than a “junk email”, like how you would use if you were to join and use a safelist.

By following these 4 tips you will be able to create solo ads that produce positive results, which means you get a good return on your investment (ROI).

  • BE SELECTIVE
When you are surfing for an ezine and you want the best and only the best, you need to turn to the resources that have already done the research for you.

Keep in mind that just because a particular ezine has 400,000 subscribers, doesn’t mean it is going to give you the best results. The larger the list, the higher the competition may be and the longer your waiting time may be. If you are like me, you want to see results FAST… like tomorrow… so stick to the smaller ezines with lists of about 10,000 to 50,000 subscribers.

In many situations, smaller lists are more responsive.

2. GIVE YOUR HEADLINE ATTENTION

It is very important to make your headline STAND OUT from the others in peoples’ email inboxes.

Use headlines that spark curiosity, causing the reader to wonder what is going to be “so exciting” or what “secret is exposed in the video”.

Use headlines such as:
  • “What will happen in 2012? Video Exposes Secret.”
  • “How to make $275 daily ON DEMAND in less than 72 hours”
  • “Brand New Robotic Marketing Software Explodes Income”
  • “Learn hypnotherapy to get what you want!”
  • “Simple Trick to get ranked high in Google”

Avoid headlines such as:
  • “Check this out”
  • “Payment received”
  • “Traffic Generation Software For Sale”
  • “Discount Weight Loss Guide”

DO NOT SELL IN YOUR HEADLINES.

AVOID USING “FREE” IN HEADLINES AND IN THE AD BODY BECAUSE THIS TRIGGERS SPAM FILTERS AND YOU ARE THEN WASTING YOUR MONEY FOR SUBMITTING THAT SOLO AD. IF YOU MUST, PUT “FRE.E” INSTEAD OF “FREE”.

3. DON’T SELL IN YOUR SOLO AD

Again, avoid selling anything in your ad because this turns away the reader. Your main goal is not to create a sale, but to create a lead, which you can use to your advantage later by promoting even more. See where I am getting at?

It is better to get 300 leads on your list and no sales for that solo ad than to get two sales and no leads to promote to later, making hundreds of sales during the years to come.

4. KEEP YOUR AD SIMPLE AND SWEET

Okay, really… no one wants to read a long life story, so just cut that junk out and get straight to the point. Don’t give away every detail on your product, service, etc., but rather make the reader eager to visit the web site to find out more information.

Ps. Be sure to track your links. You can use Bit.Ly, TinyURL or BudURL. I personally like BudURL because of the accuracy of the tracking.

It is a fact that the majority of readers scan the email message and they don’t actually read word for word. Bold some words and paragraphs, make some parts of your ad different colours, underline some phrases, and keep the reader interested.

The best part is that you don’t have to use proper English. Use short sentences. All that stuff you learnt in advanced communications…. Forget that when writing your solo ad. You can even use fragments and bullet forms!

Remain “sweet” through the ad without selling anything, but also try to create a sense of urgency to the reader. For example, tell the reader that there are only 210 copies of the free ebook to get a sneak peak at what is to come. This gets the reader to sign up to the form right away and you just generated a lead.

    Oh, no!

By the way, here is another tip: never ever write like this in your solo ads There are 2 reasons:

    1) spam filters don't like this type of writing. Who likes it? (It's harder to be read )

    2) Copywriting basics: When you want to emphasize everything you DON'T emphasize anything. Some words written ALL CAPS is OK, a whole paragraph is a NO-NO.

And now let's come back to my initial "Oh, no!"

    3) In general, there is NOTHING WRONG to use the word free in your emails. It is penalized by spam filters only in some specific combinations of words. It is also penalized by spam filters when the sender tries to be smart and writes not like a normal email user writes but like a spammer. Like F R E E (spaced free) or F.R.E.E (gappy text).

    4) Inserting dots in words is not professional. You don't want your reader to think that you don't know to write, do you? Most of the readers don't know about spam filter problems, words that trigger spam filters and stuff like that. There is only one elegant way to deal with the spam filter triggers: use synonyms instead.

    5) If you move the dot a little bit - like this: fr.ee - you'll lose some traffic. I don't know about other web-based email clients, but in Gmail fr.ee is a clickable link (that website exists and gets some nice traffic from the marketers who don't know what they are doing ).
