Death of the $497 "Big Box" Course?

Hey Guys -

It seems that a lot of the old school marketing strategies are being blown out of the water in favor of shorter, quick money grab techniques.

The traditional internet marketing strategy was something like this:
  • offer a free report to get subscribers
  • offer a $39 mini-course to the subscribers
  • offer a $497 "advanced" course to the mini-course buyers
  • offer a $1997 coaching program to the advanced buyers
There were variations, of course, in pricing and levels, etc., but you get the idea.

Today however, I see something more along the lines of:
  • the $39 mini-course is now a free PDF and Camtasia video
  • the $497 advanced course is now a $77 digital only download, stuffed with repackaged affiliate "bonus" products
  • the only back end seems to be endless affiliate spams
Are we witnessing the death of the Big-Box-Shipped-To-Your-Door products? Is anyone still building their own product line?

I'm genuinely interested to hear how people are thinking (and re-thinking) their strategies for today's market.

I've got a JV project with an expert lined up for November. The front end is going to be a $47 webinar. The back end is going to be a home study course priced somewhere between $297 - $497. There will also be additional upsells for coaching and/or consulting with the expert.

Our plans haven't changed based on what the "Internet Marketing" or "Make Money Online" niches are doing. Those price points still represent a very good value in plenty of markets. And I'm sure there are plenty of IM/MMO marketers still having success with the "traditional internet marketing strategy" as you describe it.

Former method is 20%. Top of the pyramid. Few of them. Top money-makers. Primary goal: Build trust, genuinely help & focus on life-time customer value.

Later method is 80%. Bottom of pyramid. Lots of them. Self-serving, "I need cash" niche polluters. Primary goal: Get new people into the system. Get money from them. Cycle repeats.

You're only hearing about the later, because there's more of them.

The traditional sales funnel is alive and well. Unfortunately, so are the "build a list and hammer them until they buy or die" crapmeisters.

Some of the shifting of products from low-end paid to free can be laid at the feet of people like Eben Pagan, Frank Kern, and others with their notion of "moving the free line."

Even then, a professional sales funnel will still take the interested parties up the ladder.

There is still plenty of traditional sales going on, you just get into the hyped up nonsense that a lot of "Gurus" say works. The lack of good products and lack of any real backend is really just lazyness and a hope at a get rich quick scheme. Of course this is just my opinion...

  • Nah, high-ticket products still sell well. It's the marketing that's getting more complex, but if you build up enough value and reputation, you can still sell $497 or even $1997 without a problem.

Glad to hear that the traditional model still has life!

I guess I'm just tired of getting endless spams from gurus that I KNOW have not even seen the products their pitching, let alone used them, and formed an honest opinion.

Might be time to do a little "unsubscribing" this weekend . . .
