Can someone teach me about google local business results

INTERNET MARKETING

Hi,

When you search for something in google like 'New York Florist' you will get right at the top of Google a map with the heading 'Local Business Results'.

Is the position of businesses in this list ranked according to regular SEO? Or is there other tricks you need to do to get the top spot there?

You need to submit your business to Google Places. On-page SEO helps, especially having the keyword in the domain. There are other things you can do once your business is listed, such as acquiring reviews and getting inbound links, but I've never gone beyond just listing the domain, and I've gotten to the top. Your rank depends a lot on how competitive the keyword is. If you're seeing several businesses already listed for your keyword, then it may be difficult to overtake them. However, if you see only one business listed (or no businesses listed), then it will be easier.

A jeweler friend of mine found every time he searched for his business in Google, his top competitor would always show up in the adsense/adwords on the right hand side of the Google search.

It turns out the competitor was buying adwords clicks and using the names of all the other jewelers in town as keywords.
