Was just wondering what sort of traffic this search engine gets compared to the big 3 and what sort of users?

Well, the big 3 get 95% of the search traffic...

And Ask is usually near #5... On my highest volume website, Ask is #4 with 1.6% of the total traffic sent to my domain in Aug 2010...

For the year, Ask is #5 for me, sending 1.4% of my search traffic for the year...

My search engine traffic so far in 2010 is 145,000 clicks....

I read it's mostly stay at home mom's that use it. I have no idea why. As far as volume I don't know. Maybe try alexa.com and look at it's numbers. No reason not to exclude it.

95 million unique users apparently just checked over at there site was thinking of trying some ads out thats why I ask, might give it a whirl and see what happens suppose its just a case of testing. If its stay at home mums there might be some ok volume in certain places

That said, many people miss the golden opportunity to gain traffic if they are not having success from the big 3.... does it really matter where your next 1000 visitors come from? And if it's easier to get a front page listing on a tight keyword at Ask than at Google... good idea perhaps.

      Me thinks so.

Me has always thought so too...

I wrote a couple articles about not limiting yourself to just Google or the top three...

The year I made the comparison, it was something like 22,000 page views that arrived from the other 49 search engines that were not in the big three...

People came after me with figurative baseball bats, because I was trying to cost them money, by getting them to think outside of the Google box... LOL

Fine, I said... You keep your heads in the sand, and I will keep reaching for that money you think is not big enough to pursue...

I agree with not ignoring the other search engines - but you can't get away from the fact that the majority of traffic is from Google.

As long as you follow good old fashioned SEO principles, you'll usually have faily good rankings on the others too, but I would personally focus specifically on Ask for example.

It would be logical to think that because there is less competition it would be easier, but I find Google easier than any other search engine to optimise for, partly because they crawl so often - Ask for example doesn't crawl very oftem.

In terms of traffic yeah Ask will do tons in comparison to a normal website - but not in comparison to the likes of Google, yahoo & Bing.

Used to be Ask Jeeves - it was pretty big in the UK at first, they did quite a lot of TV advertising here.

        Cheers

I am definitely saying to do consider Ask and the other search engines who are not in the top 3.

The whole argument can be surmised in the question of whether one perceives search engine traffic to be the gold standard...

My site gets a quarter million visitors per year, but only 115,000 visitors from the search engines...

If I were someone who believed the only traffic worth having was from search engines, I would lose 55% of my yearly traffic... 45% of my traffic is search engine driven...

Without a doubt, Google is the granddaddy of search... It is even the #1 source of traffic to my website period, even though it only accounts for 40% of my yearly traffic...

But if I acted as if Google was and is the only reason for my existence, then I would be throwing away an incredible amount of traffic, for no other reason than I felt it was not worth chasing...

The next step is to consider what traffic sources convert best... From my own internal traffic, Google is not my best converting traffic... My articles that are syndicated to newsletters convert far better than all other sources of my traffic...

I am not alone in saying that Google is not generally the best-converting traffic, although other marketers utilize other sources of traffic than I do... Some do well with CPV and media buys... Others do well with FB traffic...

The whole point I am trying to convey is if we wear blinders when we search for traffic, we will never truly see or understand the big picture, nor will we be able to find the real gold in our traffic data...
