I hear people saying stuff like "You have to have a system".

What do you mean by a system? A set of procedures?

A system is a set of step by step procedures that achieve a specified goal. The most common I can think of might look like:
      1) Keyword Research
      2) Setup (purchase webspace/domains)
      3) Create/Post content
      4) Monetize
      5) Promote
      6) Smile

At least, thats what I think.

A system is also a proven, efficient way of doing a job so that
you don't have to start from scratch each time that you do the
task. It's something that you can document, and then hand off
to someone else, and they would do the job in the same way.

I think of a system as a time-saver since you don't have to
figure out how to do the task each time that you do it.

A system is something you can follow.. a Plan from A to Z for example. Something that everyone can follow through easily. I think you need a discipline and a system to success on internet marketing

      addykho,
From my experience there is no plan/system that everyone can follow easily.
Each person is different in not only their knowledge but also their decision
      making processes.

Side note: Even the best systems fail in the wrong hands.

We find a lot of people get mixed up when it comes to Systems.

A procedure is a specified series of actions or operations which have to be executed in the same manner in order to always obtain the same result under the same circumstances.

A system is a set of interacting or interdependent entities forming an integrated whole.

So Wordpress is a system and entering posts etc would be a procedure.

The reason you want a system is to make your work easier. You just write the post then the system takes over and does all the logistics and management for you.

      Quentin,
Exactly, It's what someone does to give the system a USP that makes or
breaks it. By not creating USP increases the competition and negates the n
logic of jumping into the niche. Or at least makes the niche a lot harder to
      dominate.

A system, or, a set of procedures can also be seen as a routine. Example: For years I was unorganized in my previous business. I would work 3 days straight, never tracked sales, repurchase product randomly. Then after many years I scaled down my hours, I did my inventory count, and, received goods all in the same day. I took a day off that I knew sales were sluggish and I also stop working during non peak hours. I made more money and did less with more because I simply had a ritual I followed down to the same time and days.

It will come down to trial and error if you don't get it the first time.

I think "follow a PROVEN business model" is far better advice than "have a system". A system may or may not be proven, so just having a system may not get you anywhere. It's better to do a bit of research first and find out what's actually working for people (through observation, not through buying a bunch of products).

Also, never forget that you can tweak a proven business system to make it your own. You need to own the process, from start to finish in order to understand WHY it is successful. When you figure out the nuances, you can then go into "rinse and repeat" mode.

Willie pretty much hit the nail on the head with exacting precision!

Anytime I'm targeting a Keyword Phrase, it's always the exact SAME system to get me to the top of the SERPs.

I never sit down and draw up a new or different battle plan for each website or Keyword Phrase.

Michael, actually, you just essentially made a profound statement.

Profound because so many people miss the whole point of having a system.

I just had a thought pop into my head and that single thought triggered a question that been nagging me for sometime. Lets say that me for instance just starting out does some things that are done right and some that are not. Or to even muddle the waters even more say you are doing the all right things but some are in the wrong order. How in the world can you create a system with not knowing which things are correct or in the correct order.
I can't give specific examples as that would be a system if I understand correctly but a rough outline would inlude, research on niches, keywords, products, traffic, building a list, conversion and so on.
Each of those topics involves procedures and I guess some procedures deserves their own catagory, that if done correctly leads to a system of rinse and repeat. But if one area breaks down then the whole system becomes skewered and worthless especially if you don't know where its failing or out of order at.
Or is this a case of analysis paralysis? Or a dumb question? Or both?

Or is this a case of analysis paralysis? Or a dumb question? Or both?

If you start with a system which someone else you TRUST has given you then you take out the "worthless" portion of your concern. Examples:

      John Schwartz - Zeus66:
      http://www.warriorforum.com/main-int...o-excuses.html
      http://www.warriorforum.com/main-int...o-excuses.html

      Travis Petelle - petelta
      http://www.warriorforum.com/main-int...d-traffic.html

Both of those are solid systems to use, it just depends on your needs.

The rest of it comes down to a very simple portion of your system. You must be testing all the time and reviewing results. When you see a breakdown in your system you go back to your testing and see where the breakdown is.

Are you failing to get traffic? Are you failing to convert the traffic to an opt-in? Is your opt-in list not converting? As you learn those facts you tweak and split-test the weak link in your system and improve it.

Any system needs to have a component of testing and improvement.

Is it a dumb question? No, it was a great question. Is it a case of paralysis by analysis? I don't know, are you taking action right now?

It means they want you to pay $x to someone for a money making system, and it usually begins with a click on their sig.

Be cautions of any system that is offered for sale. The juicy systems don't see the light of day until they have been saturated and devalued enough for the masses to see.

Once it hits the forums, consider it to be old news - though possibly still worth something to those at the bottom. Just don't buy into the claims that you are going to get rich doing it. While the system early on may very well have been lucrative (and thus the income claims are technically true), it almost certainly isn't anymore due to saturation that took place before the system was even offered for sale.

For me a system is a puzzle that comprises of a lot of different little sub-systems that I have gleaned from reading a gizzilion make money reports. So I will use one bit of a system for product creation; another one (two three or more) for marketing and keyword research and others for following up on things (tracking, autoresponders etc). So I guess to me a system is a group of smaller systems that are clear enough that when you do find something that works you can repeat it as often as you like.

Side note: DubDubDubDot thanks - should probably change my sales copy then - I am forever talking about systems; ooops.

"Is it a dumb question? No, it was a great question. Is it a case of paralysis by analysis? I don't know, are you taking action right now?"
Kansas Dragon thanks for those links. I did watch some of the videos in the 1st part and they seem clear and doable. Will watch the others later.
Right now though I am better at making excuses than taking action. And that bothers me cause I've never been one set idly by.And I do take action in other areas just not in this one area. I worked for 35 years, always for somebody else. That may be part of a needed mindshift that I need to undergo.
Part of it may also be due to being disabled with heart attacks and losing self-confidence from a lack of vitality. I am also the main caregiver in my family.
Part of it is also due to the amount of emails I get each day. Right now I have over a 1,000 unread messages in my inbox. I am interested in every thing under the sun it seems, everything from marketing to self improvement with all that contains. Several months ago I unsubscribed to two pages of lists or it would be even more crowded.
See I just listed all the excuses.
Actually that process helped me. I'm going to pare down that list...now.
What I'd really like to do is write articles but left to my own discretion I wouldn't know where to start as I'm fairly knowledgable in many areas...and I'm interested in them all.
So thank you this has been fairly therapeutic for me.

A system is plan that usually involves a traffic source and a method/approach. There are many good systems being taught out there (free and paid) and finding one th fits your situation shouldn't be hard.

The problem is that many people are not able to stick with something for more than just 1 or 2 weeks. The vast majority of beginners are always jumping from one system to another without putting their focus on something for enough time.

So be aware that just finding a good system is not enough, you need to master it, and the only way you have to do it is by sticking with it for more than just a few days.

    Willie's is a GREAT explanation.

I'll elaborate a little further, upon how I understand the term 'system'.

A 'system' is a collection of 'processes'. A 'process' is a sequence of steps that achieve a specific end goal.

Let's take infoproduct creation as an example.

First, you'll research a niche. That's a process. You'll do keyword research (number of searches, competition analysis, related product searches, forum and blog post reading, and more).

Then, you'll outline your product. That's a process. You'll decide on chapters, content for each, finalize a table of contents, etc.

Next, you'll create your infoproduct. That's a process. You'll create, outsource or curate content for your product, and edit/compile it into a whole.

Finally, you'll publish it. That's a process. You'll choose a format (digital, print), a medium (Kindle, paperback), a channel (bookstore, online) etc.

Now, together, these processes become your infoproduct creating SYSTEM.

It is repeatable, can be outsourced, streamlined, improved, honed, refined - and MEASURED.

    And therefore, improved upon.

Until it becomes optimized and maximized.

That's why 'getting a system' is important to a serious business owner. It literally let's you make money as you sleep!

    Hope this helps.

    All success

Please do not let this part slide by. It's the key to the vault.

If you are not measuring the key parts of your system, you don't have a "system". At best, you have a plan, blueprint or recipe.

And....you need to know exactly what you are going to do every morning when you wake up to work towards the goals that you have set for yourself.

If you have or ever had a job working for someone else...you know (or should know) exactly what is expected of you. When you leave one day, you have a pretty darn good idea of what your next day entails.

This seems to get lost for many who are self un-employed and struggling.
