$300 Blogging License - Big Brother Wants Its Share

I just got word of this disturbing news today! The city of Philadelphia is now requiring its people to purchase a $300 business license to run a blog! Isn't that crazy!? Just Google "blogging license" and you'll see the articles about it.

Here's a snippet from the article:
Between her blog and infrequent contributions to ehow.com, over the last few years she says she's made about $50. To [Marilyn] Bess, her website is a hobby. To the city of Philadelphia, it's a potential moneymaker, and the city wants its cut.
In May, the city sent Bess a letter demanding that she pay $300, the price of a business privilege license.
"The real kick in the pants is that I don't even have a full-time job, so for the city to tell me to pony up $300 for a business privilege license, pay wage tax, business privilege tax, net profits tax on a handful of money is outrageous," Bess says.
Even casual bloggers are being required to buy a license to blog. Even if they make like $10 a year from it.

Has anyone else heard about this? I'm also curious about how and when you guys start reporting your internet marketing income on your tax filings. Would you report it even if it was a small amount like less than $500?

interesting. I guess if every government doing the same thing. Blogging licence will be the biggest income for every government. For parents, it will be a burden as they have to pay for their kids blog, if they are having Google Adsence in their blog

Sounds like a real good reason to leave Philly if you ask me.

Not really sure about the constitutionality of that ordnance. Sounds like a case could be made that Philadelphia is trying to limit free speech.

The license is not for the right to run a blog, it is for people who profit from their blog. The city of philadelphia views this as running a "business" even if you are only generating pennies in adsense revenue.

As far as leaving Philly, I live outside of Philly and can tell you more than 100 to get out
