Unsure of which way to go with my blog

Hi everyone,

I took a course for beginners and am very glad I did. The training was really good, but I am still left with some questions. I have a niche blog and I believe it still might be just too broad. There are some great keywords for it, over 40 so far and counting. Anyway, I am wondering if I could just pick maybe 10 or 20 of the more searched keywords, write my articles on those keywords and still make it in the niche. The competition is still low...low PR's and backlinks for my main keyword, but this is my first blog and just not sure. There are plenty of products to sell and with some promotion, I should be ok. Anyway, since this experience, I have thought of other niches that I will definitely tackle, but I don't want to give up on this one just yet.

Also, I just found out that there needs to be some kind of disclaimer on your site stating that you are getting a commission if the person clicks and buys a product. Is that still true? And where do you place the disclaimer?

Thanks,

Heidi

Generally speaking aim for the longtail 'buyer' keywords first with the least competition. These keywords often have modifiers such as 'buy', 'order', 'review', 'free delivery', 'cheap', ' discount' etc. Other ways they can be indicated in keywords is by the use of modifiers such as model numbers, colors etc.

Don't worry so much about the search volume because its the buyers you want.eg. It's better to get 73 buyers to your page rather than 1000 info seekers. Keep pumping out the content and distribute it as widely as you can with links back to your site.

About a disclaimer: for a sales page then often you will often see a disclaimer at the bottom in small print. If you don't have a sales page its nowadays best practice to have a 'terms of service' page where you have the legal stuff.

Thanks! I don't have a sales page, so I will look into the other option you mentioned.

I'm not sure what business model the course taught you, but generally in the blogging world the biggest thing with a blog is content and lots of it.

Have a look at how many posts the leading blogs out there have, compare your site to leaders in your niche.

If you really want to break into a niche you generally need a lot of high quality content, so post lots.

30 new posts a month should be minimum if you are doing it yourself (only takes an hour a day).

I typically start with 30 posts per month, and as the Google rankings overall improve I'll ramp it up into the hundreds, maybe filtering what content appears on the front page and which does not (so only the best is on the front page).

Community and connecting with your readers is also a huge aspect of blogging, and regular content is again a big part of that.

Try to be different and produce great content. There's more to a great blog than just choosing the right keywords (in fact a lot of successful bloggers never do any keyword research, although I think it is a good skill to utilize, but certainly not a primary skill in blogging).

If you think your covering too many categories, then narrow it down a little bit.

I see a lot of people that want to focus in micro-niches, and build a site for each topic. In my opinion, that is a waste of time.

Build a single authority site that covers the topics that you want to cover - and go from there.

Thanks for all the replies! I think I am just going to narrow the niche down and go from there. I am done thinking about it. I just need to get it up and check its stats and see where it leads me.

About micro sites, it depends on what your goal is, and how you intend to get traffic. If you're in a big niche and you're building out a network of micro sites for SEO, I'm all for that.

About focusing on a small group of keywords, that's a good a good idea too if you're working with a group of well researched keywords. You can have a site that makes a grand or more just off one keyword (one that's capable of getting enough traffic). Diversifying is a good idea as well if your intent is to build a long-term business.

  • Just write. That's which direction you should go. Just write and write and write and write... then write some more.

If you're any good, people will enjoy your blog, and in a year or two you could be making some scratch.
