Another selling strategy from the "Gurus" - What's next?

Last week, I received a mail from a guru that I trust, it was an invitation to watch a brand new webinar that he made with another guru, well, I watched it, it was 2 hours length.
Although the content was good, they didn't give out mostly anything of the things needed to implement the method correctly, so, it was obvious that they were going to sell me something at the end, of course, that is perfectly normal in free webinar.
But, at the end, they explained that they had a new upcoming product about the topic, and that they needed testimonials, so, they were going to take 15 apprentices to implement the method before the launch, so they gave a link to fill out an application to be choosen.
The application was extensive, and it had questions like "Why do you think you are a possible candidate?", "Explain your internet marketing knowledge", "How much time and money are you willing to invest?", "Why is internet marketing your choice to make money?", etc.

I spent almost an hour writing and re writing my answers, with the hope of being choosen into an early bird in a great product.
Also, I recorded a video of myself talking about the questions to add a bonus and be choosen.

Two days later, I receive a mail from one of the Gurus, with the subject "Congratulations", they mail didn't say anything, just a link to a members area, but when I went it, I found a sales letter with clickbanks screenshots, it was basically selling a coaching for $997, imagine my surprise.
They made me fill out an application like if it were some kind of scholarship, just to sell me an expensive coaching, and i'm 100% sure that those "15 people" was pure crap, they just had an autoresponder to send the same thing to all those who completed the application.

I must say, I'm shocked, If they want to promote a coaching, that's perfect, but please, don't make desperate people to wast time like that.

    That's not cool, but it gives me an idea.

    Is there anyway you could turn your answers into a free product to build a list with?

    You've already invested time in it, now see if you can think of ways to use it.

    Just a thought, and...

    That's really crass and very misleading. What a total waste of time. I would send them a bill for my time forwarded by my attorney.

    That was really a huge waste of time from a 2 hr webinar to filling out a massive application and making a video ... all to find out that it was after all, just a sales pitch instead of what they led you to believe. What a novel approach, although I can't see how this isn't going to make people just plain mad.

      Well... remember that they are aiming to people desperate for money, probably, if I were a complete newbie and had no idea about the strategy of these people, i'll probably just buy the coaching, convinced that I was actually choosen to learn from them, I'm pretty sure that they have sold some coachings already.

    That is deceiving and unethical as far as I'm concerned. They might have made some sales, but I don't think it would've been that much of an effective marketing strategy either. May be they just wanted to try out a new 'tactic' to test or something.

    If only they turn it around only a little, it can turn out to be a very lucrative strategy.

    Here is what can be done by just changing a little bit about this strategy.

    After the webinar, get the applications and actually 'chose' or 'select' the right candidates for the beta test.

    Coach them, give them the product or whatever they plan to sell at a later stage for Free as initially promised.

    Totally over deliver.

    If the stuff works, and they provide support to the beta testers throughout the process, they should have no problem getting those testers to be raving fans. After all, not only the beta testers were lucky enough to get selected, they tried and tested the product, received support and got results!

    They shouldn't have any problems what so ever getting written or video testimonials.

    And we all know, Results oriented reviews and testimonials such as "I tried this product by Marketer X and achieved xxxx results in just xxx days...." are worth much more than "I've seen the product and its great" kind of testimonials.

    With results based social proof oozing from the Sales copy, Marketer XX multiplies the sales many times over from his launch.

    But if only... they had ethical and yet innovative tactics.

    By the way, I am not just speaking hypothetically here. I did exactly that to get my social proof [with little changes suited to my product of course] and got super awesome results in terms of testimonials, reviews and Sales.
