Best way to rank locally?

Hello all.

I was just wondering if the strategy to get traffic to a website for a local business is any different than for an online business? I own a small computer services business and would like to make sure my site ranks well when people search for "computer repair (my city)".

My domain name is the name of my business so what could I do to ensure that I rank when someone searches for computer services in my area. Is this wear it might pay to use Adwords and pay for some clicks or is there a way to target customers locally using some of the same strategies that are used in IM for an online business?

Change the title tag of your website to you "computer repair my city". That's just a start. Put the same phrase in h1 tags on your website. I would also recommend you add your business to Google local. You can get ranked quite highly on the local listings.

The are many other methods but they are the only ones I can think of off the top of my head.

There's three components: On-page SEO, Off-page SEO, and networking. I'm sure you'll get a lot of advice on the SEO stuff (match title, URL, and keywords meta with the keywords you want to target [city your business] and get lots of backlinks), so I'll stick to the networking part.

Join your local Chamber of Commerce and get involved in the community. Do high-value things for your customer pool. Get your flyers, brochures, and business cards in the hands of your fellow business owners. Join a business networking club.

You'll make far more local connections that have high value this way than any other.
