A Loaded question about long tail keywords (for you analytical IMrs)

For all you IMrs that spend a lot of time looking at keyword logs and analytics I have a question...

This is a broad question but any feedback would be appreciated.

If you placed an article on your website that was not at ALL targeting any keyword...It was just a good article in a very high traffic niche...what kind of traffic can you expect?

Of course, assuming you have a hand-full of backlinks and the article is indexed.

Would it be safe to expect about 10/hits per month with that article?

Now, I know that without a ton more information there is no way to give an extremely accurate answer to this question...

BUT on average is it a safe bet so say you will at LEAST get 10 hits per month with this article?

thanks

I can't see you getting any organic searches because with no keywords you wouldn't rank for anything in particular which means who is going to find you. I am wondering why you would want to put it out there with no keywords at all?

Every written piece of content has "keywords". Just because you didn't pick and place them doesn't mean they are not there.

Keywords are just search words or phrases and your site will be indexed according to what Google's algorithm has deemed what your site is about based on the words, phrases, and blocks of content it has gleaned when it crawled your site.

If you don't choose the keywords in your articles, there is still an underlying theme based on the words you chose and that is what Google is trying to index.

If I wrote a story about my dog dying and was not trying to get it indexed for anything at all, Google could still choose to pull it up if someone searched for "dogs".

All content that can be read, viewed, or heard represents an idea regardless of who chooses what they want it to mean.

p.s. Didn't see Tina's answer when I was writing this. Obviously I agree with her but I had to be long-winded about it

p.p.s. To the OP, it looks like you are going to win your argument

  • thank you all so much for the feedback. But no one really answered my question lol

Would it be safe to expect about 10/hits per month with a quality article in a large niche if google chose ALL the keywords?

    Has anyone ever tested this?

      A. Google will NOT choose all of the keywords. It will try and determine out of all of the words which "idea,theme..." your site is trying to express and see if it hits with the keywords being searched for.

All other considerations are taken like backlinks etc.

      B. Without knowing the niche and other details about the article acceptance within the niche, I can say it is possible to NOT get 10 hits a month.

I realize that it didn't answer your question but without more information there is no way to tell.

Is it a safe assumption based on how you presented it? Yes.

But as I already stated, I know for a fact that it is possible to have a very good article in a very competitive niche and NOT get 10 hits a month. There are too many more variables involved in getting hits.

Here is a question for you: Do you think it's possible to have a site on the front page of Google for a very competitive niche and not have anyone click on your link?

How about if your title said: "Click here to see if I can give you a bad virus"

I have some articles in a competitive niche that I put no effort into. They have no external backlinks, and are on my "second tier" as far as internal linking goes -- meaning they aren't linked to directly from my home page, but only from lower internal pages.

They were written with a target keyword in mind, but the niche is so competitive that they don't rank in any meaningful way. Their only purpose is to be content that makes my site bigger. Some of them aren't even unique, because they were pulled from article directories with links intact.

So anyway, these articles get organic visits. People search and land on them. Usually it's single digits monthly, but sometimes as many as 15 or 20. If I had a need to average, I'd say 8, not 10, but close enough.

They get visits because they are surrounded by other keywords that appear in site navigation, and sometimes the article contains a word or phrasing that, in combination with all the niche-related keywords that appear on the page, manages to match what a person searched for.

I use this to my advantage: recently I added an article with "Facebook" in the title to my site navigation, to benefit from Facebook serendipity. I figure people use that word A LOT in searches. And I was right, I'm getting single-digit search volumes hitting scattered pages just because I can match on the word Facebook now.
