Making a living off of funny status updates

Lately I've been getting a lot of praise for my status updates on Facebook and tweets on Twitter. Not trying to toot my own horn or anything, it just got me thinking...

There are tons of guys out there who are writing awesome status updates, yet it seems it doesn't have a greater purpose...

And I say "seems" because I suspect I'm missing what's really happening behind the scenes. What I mean is, I've been wondering: how do people who have a talent to write cool status updates leverage it?

Yeah, I understand how people can leverage it just to get more popularity and fame, but what I REALLY want to know is: "How do I make a living doing this?"

Seems kind of pointless for what I do (coaching) because half my friends on Facebook are hot women I added at random.

But do you think there is some dream job out there for a guy like me where I just live my life and post funny one liners from a smartphone all day and get paid to do it? I want to make that happen, but I can't figure out what circumstances would need to happen.

If not that, what are some very cool ways to leverage this (other than the obvious social proof.)

If you have any thoughts on this, I'd truly appreciate hearing them. Thanks very much

Yes ... if your funny tweets build up a huge following, e.g. 1 million follows advertisers will pay you big $ to send their product as a tweet.

Especially if you can make it a funny tweet with 'product placement' rather than a blatant advert, and this could work well for establish brands that appeal to a mass non-niche specific audience. For example Coke.

Then when you are famous, you can release your greatest tweets as a book.

Another way is if you create "Funny Tweet PLR" or become a "Funny Tweet Ghostwriter" and help other marketers who need great tweets but don't want the bother of writing them themselves.

I'd love to ghostwrite! Where do I find (or how do I attract) companies that want to do this?

You need to position yourself as an authority and carve out a niche for yourself, start contacting companies and ask them directly. Don't undersell yourself but don't be unreasonable. Also some proof (i.e. clever/creative tweets) would help.

You should contact me as I'm a social media strategist, maybe we could do some work together and I could set you up with a client or 2?

Well I guess this is just like any other sales task / marketing task.

You have a service - writing great tweet messages. That could include a twitter viral marketing strategy.

The benefit to companies / internet marketers is viral marketing - attracting big followings to their lists as people tell their friends about the list.

You could sell direct to big corporations , or team up with a viral marketing company who is in cahoots with big corporations already so they can resell your services to them.

That's my idea but I am not expert. There is a warrior called James Hickey who did a load of free twitter webinars a while back, and does a fair bit of offline marketing I believe. He would be a good person to ask for ideas.

There are many apps on FB called "Quotes". To which are you referring?

Check out Sh$* My Dad Says and learn off his model, he wrote a book and just released it all based off of his twitter feed and he doesn't even have that many followers. Try ensuring that your following is not just growing but genuinely responsive and cares, how often do they retweet? what % of your tweets get a RT? Can you immediately see a rise in followers after a RT? etc.

I'd also focus on having a "goal" or some sort of over arching wisdom to your account, do you let people know who/what you are/do?

Yes but gaining followers on Twitter doesn't necessarily mean building your authority. You can buy followers to gain followers, you need to be clever and creative. Take a company, make a clever spin off of one of their recent tweets and get in touch with them and pitch it to them or whoever is reading their twitter feed. There are thousands of "funny" people on Twitter and using a #hashtag won't score you a job.

No I understand how followers, RT's and CPA works. But he wants to write for large companies. I don't think he is just looking for CPA through twitter, he wants to carve out a niche for himself. While building a following is great, it won't necessarily help him ghost tweet. Now if he wanted to sponsor a bunch of junk like Netflix, a company of any kind or other CPA offers then it's great, but if he wants to write tweets for companies having a huge following isn't necessary.

Ok ... I knew this guy ... a gay guy ... who made a living from funny status updates. He really was a very funny guy and he had a large following. His blog was funny and he used Twitter to tell people where he'd be having coffee that day and all kinds of people would swarm to the coffee shop to have coffee with him.

He had a Paypal donate button on his blog and that's where the money came from. Granted, it wasn't a million dollars, but it paid his bills.

I would also be interested in which FB page with monetized "Quotes" app. Might pick up some ideas from it. Thanks!

Hmmm... I've had a twitter account for sometime already but haven't been that active in using it.. This post and its thread has just inspired me to try to be active on twitter and try to get a following. I might create a following that I might be able to monetize someday. Well, I guess thanks to MayorOfTheParty for starting this thread!
