What Success Have You Had With Podcasts?

Hey everyone,

I am looking at starting up a daily podcast. Has anyone had any success with doing this to drive targetted traffic? Is it worth the time?

A buddy of mine did this:

You need some backing, marketing of your podcast, it won't work if you just place it online and hope for the best.

There are tons of social networking sites for podcast listeners and suppliers, start there, head to youtube post podcasts there, post to social bookmarking sites, etc, etc.

    It works..

    When you have listeners

Ah ok I see. So posting an advert for the podcast on event type sites or sites where there are actual listeners to give it expossure. I wonder if there are any partnering opportunities in the podcast rhelm to get quick expossure...

    What I would do...

Create a sample podcast that is valueable to the specific target market.

Package this podcast in a compressed folder and email it to a few of the top website owners in your niche as well with a handful of list owners.

Offer them the podcast to their readers, build a win/win scenerio for yourself and them.

If you do your research well on the market, the name of the podcast etc. *especially* on iTunes... it can be very worthwhile. Doing it daily though, you really need to be prepared to deliver quality every single day. It's not for everyone. It takes a little practice to do it smoothly, get into a rhythm and to not waste time doing it. The worst thing you can do is a rambling podcast that your audience doesn't know what to expect. Repetition and expectation is the key, really.

It may be better to do a weekly show, and even better to have a partner to do it with to share the load. I did this with a podcast I started at the height of the Web 2.0 hoopla in 2007 (Web 2.0 Marketing Live) and got ranked very high thanks to that buzzword and almost no competition. Got a nice audience, and leveraged it with an ebook + membership combo later down the line.

It all comes down to whether you have the personality and the stamina to do it. iTunes is chock full of podcasts with just a few episodes and then... nothing. On the other hand, it's a very underrated technology right now and in a lot of ways it's a great way to gain a REAL audience that quickly learn to know, like and trust you (as opposed to just numbers in an autoresponder account)... and buy from you.
