Wordpress users - watch out for this

I just noticed that when I automatically upgrade Wordpress to version 3.01, it changes my privacy settings to "Search Engines Blocked."

Has anyone else noticed this?

I upgraded 5 different blogs and it happen with them all. I noticed it as soon as I upgraded. Prior to the upgrade, the blogs were not blocking the search engines and were indexed fine. Obviously the Search Engines Blocked setting is not recommended for SEO purposes lol.

I haven't noticed it on my blogs. Do you upgrade automatically or manually?

      Didn't happen to me

      But I only upgraded 3.0.0 to 3.0.1.

Did you upgrade from a very early version Ron?

I have updated 3 blogs and havent seen that. Reading The general Wordpress 3.0 features seems "Search Engines Blocked" is used to prevent people from accidentally delisting themselves. Its placed in the wp-admin header sort of mini-alert for the user.

You set it in Setting > Privacy... but in v.3.x.x it always warns you - next to your blog title at the top, which is a big improvement from the previous versions when if you forgot to set it "not blocked" after finishing the install/setup, you were just wondering why the SEs don't see your blog

I suspect that it may be a SEO plugin that causes this to happen to the main settings of wordpress. This would explain why others are not seeing this happening. Never the less I know the constant updates of wordpress plus each and every plugin makes for a nightmare to keep a wordpress site going.

Then throw in the theme you are using and hope it does not get broken by the upgrade...
Never the less it beats paying for things like Joomla...

This happened to me about a year ago. I couldn't figure out why my websites were being indexed on Google without any meta titles or meta descriptions. LOL! It was a default setting, but I haven't had a problem with it since the last upgrade...

Just so everybody here should know, the reason they do this is because they are showing that they dislike business blogs and for that reason they dont want the sites being indexed so that the value of wordpress as a business tool is gone.

They dont take it so far as to completely eliminate the option because there are other reasons for people to want indexing. Everyone should just take this as a heads up that the time of business blogs is limited and the search engines and the software creators wont tolerate it for too much longer.

What proof do you have of this? And who does "they" refer to?

As far as I am aware Wordpress installed on my server is totally under my control. The issue Ron found is probably a bug in the upgrade process and not a conspiracy by Wordpress.

I recall there was some problems with one of the earlier incarnations of WP V2. If you installed via Fantastico, it defaulted to that setting - hiding the blog from google. I think WP fixed this later. Is it possible that the blogs were set up in the past 6 months and had this default setting that you hadn't noticed until now? Mine have all been fine once I changed that setting, and the upgrade to V3 hasn't changed anything.

I've not had this problem with any of my sites, but I always use auto install.

I'm unclear why anybody would manually install when it's so easy to use auto install.

The OP is referring to auto install.

In my experience, manual install is primarily used by advanced developers in cases where there are a number of custom hacks made to the WP PHP and CSS files themselves. In this case, the developer makes code changes to the new package prior to installing the upgrade. Doing an automatic upgrade usually overwrites any custom changes that were made in the previous version.

    Sorry Ron,

I saw you original post and understood you used auto install. Didn't mean to imply anything otherwise.

I am just asking why do people manually install wordpress version updates. Maybe that question should be a separate thread.

    My best to you.

Not sure you are correct that auto updating a wordpress version will overwrite php and css. These are usually theme related within wordpress.

At least that is my experience, but what do I know? As you can see from my hub blog, and the trouble I am currently having changing the header dimensions and applying a new banner, I'm still implementing what I've thought I learned.

    My best to you,
    Jerry

      Hi Jerry,

I am talking about changes made to the platform itself--ways to change its behavior and performance. Often these sorts of code hack are necessary to get better integration with other applications, such as building a community that might be comprised of blog, forum, and gallery systems.

Here is an example of simple behavior changes:

Top WordPress hacks of early 2010

Others include how credits are displayed, copyright info delivered, image handling/blocking, or how certain menu systems operate with themes and giving them support.

Some CMS systems such as Joomla/Mambo are heavily hacked to achieve the desired results. This and security issues are reasons that I do not develop on that platform anymore, as upgrading is a PITA and not upgrading ends up being a site taken over by hostiles...

    Ron,

Yeah, I've seen it happen with the last 2 upgrades. Matter of fact, I believe there's another thread (older) about the same thing. It may have been a different version, but I do remember posting in it to saying it happened.

There was a WP version a while back (don't remember which one exactly, I could check) where a WP developer added a fix on his own initiative that set new installs to "private" - exactly the opposite of the previous and expected WP behavior.

It was fixed in the next version after quite an uproar, and the developer who did it got spanked pretty good.

BUT - if you didn't catch it on install, you were blogging away or marketing away with your software set to block SEs.

I'm thinking that maybe is what happened to Ron - installed a blog a while back and maybe didn't notice that the privacy settings were whacky. That's part of the reason that the notification is in the header section of the latest version.
